Ok...I get it that they kept Billy in a hole and fed him corpses from the local graveyard, but why would he turn into a giant cicada?
shareProbably because he had to turn into something and THE HOWLING and AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON came out the year before so werewolves were off limits. I never read the book but the idea of him turning into a cicada didn't seem too out-of-line since I figured they were aiming for a sort of HP Lovecraft feel, what with people named Curwin and such. I think the book goes into more detail about why this happens.
shareIt's still unclear in the book about WHY Michael becomes the 'beast,' but it's closer to a werewolf story than the way it's presented in the film.
