more disturbing than the passion of the christ

one bit of this movie left me with nightmares. that guy hurt his leg, couldn't walk, whatever, and sam neill shoots the poor bastard! he would have been ok...what a psycho!!

Yeah, but the alternative was to be left behind and when the machine gun post got the next group of soldiers for it, and then be captured and tortured.

Can't see a comaprison except Gibson was involved with both films. But a good point was made in that he would have slowed down the mission endangering the entire thing so he would have to be left behind. If left alive and left behind he would be caught eventually so he would endanger the mission if he was forced to talk under interragation. The only humane and logical solution was to give him a quick and painless death at hte hands of a friend then a slow and tortured death at the hands of the enemy. Sorry but war is hell and if you think that this never happened in war you are very sheltered. Special opps units such as SEALS, Rangers etc know if they cant keep up, and cant be 100% sure that they will not be captured are expendable to insure the mission. And this movie was based on an actual mission in WW II and that scene was taken from official records of the debrifing of the members who made it back. As for nightmares good, maybe if more people had nighmares arround the world when it came to warfare maybe there would be less war.

Fifth stanza of the Ranger Creed repeat after me! Energetically will I meet the enemies of my country. I shall defeat them on the field of battle for I am better trained and will fight with all my might. Surrender is not a Ranger word. I will never leave a fallen comrade to fall into the hands of the enemy and under no circumstances will I ever embarrass my country.

Leave no man behind, something only those who actually has been shot at by an enemy can really appeciate. To all of you wanna be fantasy soldiers, suck it.

All well and good but a lot of non-Ranger units who happen to be rather good at warfighting would qualify that with "if at all possible". If the situation requires it then leave a man/ men behind. Possibly euthanize them too. It's happened and will continue to happen - it's called war.

I'm ex-mil and I have had real experience of conflict. Not leaving a man behind EVER as an ethos is commendable but tactically insane and a load of Hollywood bovine excrement. Woolly thinking like that has no place on the battlefield.

i wasnt actually being serious....this film was a load of poo

reply

The movie was not a load of poo it was fairly good for the budget it was made on and was based on a real WWII mission and for cando the ranger are army, and leave no man behind is Marine and I will tell you this I was in the military and served in the Navy. Marines and Army and one factor was made clear by the special forces groups of each. No solidier will be left behind to be captured if they can be extracted with their unit great, if the wounded soldier puts the unit or the mission at risk they will not be left to be captured nor will they be brought with the group make of that what you will.

I heard it mentioned a few times by Australian special forces in ww2 that if a man was injured in battle and couldn't continue then the rest of the team would execute him. I have no doubt about it that this happened. It was advised to anyone joining the special forces that this would happen. Note this is different from regular army ww2 units.

Probably more startling is that when western forces were retreating from south east asia they made it clear to medical staff, both dr and nurses, that if they refused to leave before the japs invaded they woule be bayoneted.

None of this makes sense in these times of relative peace, but at the time in ww2 it was a necessity. The forces they fought against were the worst of the worst.

From a logical point of view it doesn't make sense either as these blokes are hardly stealthy throughout the film.

They could have rigged something up if they wanted to.

Apparently that was how the real Attack Force Z did things. In the movie it didn't help them as the Jap soldiers find the body and know there are Aussie's around.

It also effected the box office as people didn't like seeing mates kill each other. That and it's a pretty crappy film.
