Well, this movie was disturbing...

Partly true, but very deceiving. It made me sick first at the people who lived in that time, then at the depraved people who made this "documentary"

They were partially fighting for a just cause, but they managed to take things out of context and splice it together in a way that would make me ashamed to be american, if I didn't know another side to the story, which was not even mildly touched on...

reply

THis move was damn hilarious.

reply

I heard that before I watched it, but I don't see it. It tried to say it was documentary, but it's proof that you can take pieces of fact and make a lie quite easily if you're a good editor. True, much of what they were making fun of was real, but not all of it.

reply

they didnt make a lie out of it!
all of that propaganda existed, its all true
Damn i would hate to be american

reply

The Russians did the same, propaganda was a major political and military tool back then, infact it still is.

reply

it sure is still around today. it's called CNN and Disney, its all disguised these days, but its everywhere. its called pop culture

reply

Ahahahaaa... um, no. Simpleton.

reply

I know that there was bad stuff back then... They put a lot of things (other than just the propaganda videos) together out of context...

>>>Partly true, but very deceiving. It made me sick first at the people who lived in that time, then at the depraved people who made this "documentary" <<<

Notice I didn't say it was all out lies, but enough truth to sneak in deception...

Anyhow, I'm sick and tired of people who make out American to be this horrible place, when most of them haven't been here, and things go wrong in their countries too... I almost had a heart attack listening to the news in Canada... It was so vindicating after all the Anti-american stuff... People are people no matter where they live, and it's far from the worse place on earth... It's not nearly the best either, I admit, but far from the worst. We don't have coups, haven't had a civil war in a looong time, don't have segregation anymore (I've been to severely segregated countries, it's not even funny) and is a country that, as a whole, actually attempts to get rid of predjudice in it's midst... Not completely successfully, but listening to all of the people on these IMDB boards, I'd say that perhaps we're doing a better job than others... Of course, that would be predjudiced... I mean, I know people from the countries home to some of the bigots, and they aren't nearly as ignorant as they are. It just so happens that stupidity flourishes on the internet because hate is a much louder voice than love...

This documentary was deceptive. I won't back down. That era was hard, and the propoganda was very deceptive, but deception doesn't undo deception. The red scare was a horrible series of events, but this movie still portrayed the stock footage in a way that manipulated what your belief was to be. Taking things out of context will change people's beliefs... If you don't believe me, I could come up with an example convincing you of two separate things with the same data.

Who says Propaganda is bad? The masses need a firm hand to guide them. I speak from first hand experience in dealing with the inane requests we receive at my outsourced government workplace. Sure, there is a portion of the population who questions the "story" we're being force-fed, and see it for the BS that it is, so everyone who likes to generalize about "Americans" needs to wake up and realize that we don't all toe the USG's line. Back in the stick house days, it was a religious propaganda, the only difference now is that its a techno-consumer propaganda - keep everyone fat, dumb and happy.

I loved this movie, although I didn't find it as much funny as sad that people would rather accept what they're told at face value without whatsoever actually stimulating their own thinking. We all have to divine the truth for ourselves.

For another interesting wake up call, you should read Dwight Eisenhower's Farewell Address when he warns about the potential for coup courtesy of the military industrial complex - which happened only a few years later with the assassination of JFK.

propaganda implies that you manipulate information to decieve people into thinking a particular way. the masses don't need a firm hand, they need proper information and honesty, as well as trust in their ability to think for themselves. maybe you're thinking of something else, but propaganda is never ok with me, the problem is that it's getting more difficult to tell the difference between propaganda and truth these days.

as for the lies the film is telling, i'm not sure what that person is refering to. what i got out of the film was how absurd and scary the cold war was. the juxtaposition of archival footage of hiroshima and nuclear weapon testing and rediculous propaganda had an unsettling effect and it makes me grateful that we're not in the middle of a cold war anymore now.

If you're ashamed to be an American, then you don't have enough spine to possibly be an American. And all age aside, you are the naive one. I don't like it when people turn a movie review discussion into a political bashfest. And your anti-American propaganda is totally unsupported.

it takes more spine to say you are ashamed to be an american.
all of you people need to learn the difference between land and government.
i love america, i hate its federal government.
indians were americans, they didnt have our constitution.
him saying he is ashamed to be an american is at the very heart of american principles, which is not what i would consider anti-american.

'We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty. When the loyal opposition dies, I think the soul of America dies with it.' edward r murrow

'Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel.' samuel johnson

you suffer from patriotism, but theres a cure. its called liberty.

I AM ashamed to be an American. There WAS a coup in the U.S. in the 2000 election. We are subjected to more propoganda NOW than EVER before, believe me, I've obviously been around longer than you. You are very naive. The image of America has suffered greatly around the world, getting worse than it ever was, and it has never been all that good. If you believe otherwise, then the propoganda must be working on someone!

a clear thinking american. I'm suprised there's still some of you around.
American propaganda today has an almarming stronghold, and its deep within your society. in your news, in your advertising. you live it, eat it, sleep it. 90% of you probably don't even know it's there.

Well, at least you would have been able to have it treated for free :)

No offense, but you need to learn more about editing before you make this statement. Ask any single person in any form of communication. Through editing, you can make anything say anything.

Through editing I can change your original statement

"No clever editing can change the cold, hard facts of the American and Russian cruelty and inhumanity to mankind. If you are easily swayed by editing (*any* movie has an opinion and agenda behind it) then you are perhaps not quite cut out for forming your own informed opinion by filtering out others'."

to say.

"Clever editing can change the cold, hard facts of American humanity to mankind. perhaps not quite cut out for forming your own informed opinion by filtering out others."

If that seems simplistic, think of picture examples.

I could give you a million more. But if you think someone can see through editing, you are mistaken. The whole perpose of editing is to make the audience see and hear what you want.

How would you compare this film to Michael Moore's "Farenheight 911"? Two of the major themes in that movie were the effect of political propoganda and the scare tactics on the population.

It's funny though because during the atomic scare of the 50's and so on, the government tried to reasure the population that there was nothing to be afraid of, whereas more recently after 9/11, the government has done the opposite and tried to make us as apprehensive as possible about terrorist threats.

The moral of the story: Nuclear bombs don't kill people, terrorists kill people???

reply

we'll need those nukes when aliens invade. it would be moronic to decommission them, or waste them on each other.
