Meeting FDR

Who saw this as a child, having no idea who Roosevelt was, and thought Annie was simply amazed to see a man in a wheelchair?

reply

I didn't think Annie was simply amazed to see a man in a wheelchair. I knew he was the President of the United States but I didn't know anything about FDR, Eleanor Roosevelt, the New Deal, Democrats or Republicans. All the political reference went right over my head. I just thought Annie was excited to meet a president.

OP wasn't saying she was amazed to see a man in a wheelchair. They were saying that when they were younger, they THOUGHT that's why Annie was amazed. Were you never wrong as a child? Then congrats!

I found it amusing that the musical made Warbucks an FDR fan, because the creator of the comic strip, Harold Gray, was very conservative and loathed FDR. In fact, he used Annie to criticize FDR, the New Deal, unions, and pretty much anything Democratic. Read those old comics; they're very right-wing.

Warbucks likes power whatever it is. And he's shrewd enough to realize that FDR being president of USA has it, FDR is also being a Roosevelt one of Americas wealthiest families himself. Roosevelt can appeal to him easier than a president who had not grown up in wealth. Warbucks would have told off Bill Clinton who grew up dirt poor in Arkansas. The first time he had money was after he was president.
