The Priest was an idiot

No wonder the church wanted rid of him

At the end he tells the demon to take him instead Sonny so that Sonny won't feel the pain any more but now Sonny is going to spend the rest of his life in prison living with memories of what he did while the demon that the priest wanted to stop is free to keep on killing people on the outside and the priest will be unable to stop him, not only that the church won't believe him even if he could warn them because they already think he is insane

Literally every decision the priest makes at the end is a bad one

I think the priest never made it outside the house because I think he was absorbed into the evil that possessed the house. I do agree with you about Sonny although he may well have went to a mental institution. Even there, like you say, he will live with the memories of what he did to his family.

The priest was making bad decisions almost right from the start. He totally ignored Trisha when she came to talk to him about the older brother, and then he ignored the phone call that might have saved the entire family before they were slaughtered. That dude was beyond useless.

The priest had options. He had a gun. He could have killed himself, or at least, took a flying leap off the roof.

I thought it would have been a better ending if they didn't exorcise the demon at all.

Leave it in Sonny, and watch Sonny let all hell break loose inside the Prison.. Now THAT would have been interesting.
