I actually remembered when this movie came out and I thought it was just another Friday the 13tth slasher because of the poster. I just saw the movie and it is totally not what I expected.

It was like that with all VHS covers back in the day...

It's a mixture of “Silent Night, Bloody Night” (1972), “Halloween” (1978) and “Night of the Living Dead” (1968). So, yeah, it's not a slasher flick in the Friday the 13th vein, but it's not that far off either.
