The very very end of the movie, after the end credits

Why did it say, at the end of Airplane 2, "Airplane III-COMING SOON". Did this film ever get into pre production, or why was it never made?

I found the sequel much more funnier than the first one. It just had better gags that came quicker and faster.

I was disappointed that there wasn't a third "Airplane." Maybe they would have crashed this franchise into the ground (so to speak), but who knows? This was a worthy sequel to a comedy classic.
