Anyone else love this one just as much as the original?

The first film is considered "one of the funniest films ever made" by the American Film Institute, and a classic amongst film parodies, but the sequel tends to be overlooked I think. Last I heard Jim Abrahams and David and Jerry Zucker have never watched it.

Whenever I watch the original, I always put in this one next. Basically a rehash, but I love it. Without a doubt one of the most underrated sequels ever. I would have loved an AIRPLANE III had it been made in the early 1980's. But if one were to be made now, I don't think it would be the same.

Man, I absolutely loathed Ghostbusters II. If I saw in the theater I would have walked out. Back to the Future II I liked when I saw it in the theater. Today it seems very cheesy and comical.

Airplane II is a different story. I like it just as much as the first.

I am wondering if it is one of those items that if you see the sequel first before the first movie, then you will more likely appreciate the sequel. (I notice with Goodfellas vs. Casino although that is not an official sequel.) Then everything is new to you and works better and it appears the first one is taking from the second. Just wondering.

As a lover of the first movie of film perfection, (I do agree it is one of the finest movies ever), the second one is sort like watching the first again without doing so. The obviously similar jokes working the same way keeps the narrative from ever taking off and it is hard to take seriously the space adventure. And in this case we have Shatner replacing Stack in the hammy role.

I'm probably wrong, but I thought the only difference was the TV version cuts out the nudity?

I agree. I think it's one of the most underrated comedy sequels. It does what a good sequel should do—be simultaneously familiar and yet new. The fact that people today confuse Airplane 2 jokes as Airplane jokes (see Zucker Brothers Nerdist podcast) is a testament to its quality.

The 50:00 minute mark they discuss running out of ideas. I wonder had they done a sequel, what would it have been like. Would it have been more like that actual AIRPLANE II: THE SEQUEL than they're willing to admit, or would they have simply brought back the characters for a whole new story.

One idea I would've loved for an AIRPLANE III is a spoof of ship disaster movies. Have the cast trapped on a cruise ship kind of like THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE. The tagline could've been "What the ship?"

I think it is 90% as good. It is by no means a disappointment. The original my have had more jokes and was a bit longer, but nothing in the first one compares to William Shatner opening the "door" on the other side of the video screen. I almost peed my pants! The courtroom scenes are classic as well.

Airplane II is one of the best sequels ever.

If I watch them back to back, I can't really handle the second, as it is mostly a rehash like everyone has said, but I think I if I space them out far enough, I can enjoy both in their own right.

Watch the second the night after. I tend to do that sometimes.

there are far too many "recycled" jokes

I literally just finished watching it, and no, I don't love it as much as the original. It was a tired rehash of the first one. I realized while watching it that I just wasn't laughing as much. The humor in the first one seemed almost effortless, but this one felt forced.

Shatner had a few golden moments though. The door gag was hilarious.

I actually like 2 better. It's a little crazier and Shatner and Bono add a lot. I did see 2 first so that may contribute. I love both of course.

I was fascinated that it was as funny as it was! I mean, the first had three writers, and this one has...Finkleman!

There are lots of rehash jokes, but it's almost seamless how Finkleman gets right into the groove and comes up with more than enough of his own.
