Better than any parody films made today

For sure. I think the last great film parody was KUNG POW: ENTER THE FIRST, made 12 years ago.

Watch Black Dynamite! It's a fantastic parody! Kung Pow was great, too!

Tropic Thunder comes very close but it doesn't have the genius of Shatner playing Commander Murdock at the end there. That's what makes this movie almost legendary.

While there are exceptions, a lot of modern "parodies" really aren't actually parodying the genre/movie they seem to be parodying. They simply create a similar setting and then drop in a ton of random pop culture references instead of parodying the tropes. "Disaster Movie" is an example of this.


While a bit older and not exactly "modern", Galaxy Quest is an excellent more recent parody. It did an excellent job of parodying both the tropes of Star Trek, but also the real world cast conflicts and the fan culture. It did such a great job that the people being made fun of were able to laugh along with it because it was all in fun and done with clear love of the source material.
