How come there was never a third 48 Hrs. movie?

Nick Nolte himself, had his own idea:

I think the second one bombed.

I wouldn't say it bombed (it made $150 million world wide), It wasn't well received though. I didn't originally care too much for it, but it has grown on me with further viewings.

The problem that I had with Another 48 HRs. is that it was kind of a remake of the first movie (they even had to contrive a reasoning for why Eddie Murphy was still locked up eight years later). But they naturally had to tone down raw, politically incorrect verbiage (even though Jack Cates was technically the hero, he was none the less, an asshole) since that wouldn't have flown so easily in 1990 when compared to 1982. They could've thought of something better than having the brother of villain from the first movie want revenge against Jack and Reggie. And they try to be clever by *SPOILER ALERT* making Jack's cop friend Ben Kehoe from the first movie (Brion James) turn out to be the big bad/criminal mastermind, but you're just left scratching your heads and saying "What the hell was that all about?"
