I have never liked 48 Hours

I love 80s movies (Beverly Hills Cop, To Live & Die in LA..)

I like Nolte (absolutely terrific in Tales Of New York) & early Eddie Murphy (Trading Places is my favorite comedy of all time), but to me this white cop / black hustler tandem doesn't work at all.

Dry humor, painfully boring, i just don't give a crap about the characters.
48 Hours has always had a trashy feel to me and this wont change!

Stating "this won't change" proves your stubborness and therefore, stupidity. ANY human feelings can change. A statement like yours simply invalidates any possible coversation on the topic and in return makes your entire post pointless.

48 Hrs. was not only good, it was excellent. So excellent in fact, it single handedly started not one, but two Hollywood genres: The action/comedy and the Buddy/Cop genre.

Do you realize how many movies would never have been made without 48 Hrs?? No Lethal Weapon, Rush Hour, Tango & Cash, Beverly Hills Cop, Bad Boys, Red Heat, Hot Fuzz, Die Hard With A Vengence, Bulletproof, man I could go on forever but I'm sure you get my point. Even your beloved Trading Places has a very similar premise: Straight and narrow white guy crosses paths with a fast talking black hustler and comedy ensues. What sets 48 Hrs. apart from the other movies that it influenced, was that 48 Hrs. had a grittier and in my opinion more realistic feel than the others.

If you don't like 48 HRS, you have zero taste for the genre. Period. There is no redemption in the cards for you. Everything great that's missing from mainstream Hollywood action films today is present in 48 HRS. It's text book and cinematically perfect all the way down to James Horner's bluesy score.

How is this a troll post?

Why does everyone assume when someone comes onto a board of a film they don't like , they are instantly cast out as a troll or flamer , i can honestly say i agree with most of you when it comes down to this movie starting the cop Buddie films, but you cant cast out someones opinion , and the member who posted a response first is a idiot , its a opinion , and even if his opinion isn't valid to you , its valid to him , what you think is your opinion , and it wont change his.

So stop trying to act smart by saying peoples views aint valid you 3 breasted alien from total recall!

Everybody is entitled to their opinion. Even if it is dumb.

Disagree with the OP. This is one of my favorite movies. The best Murphy film by far IMO. Had a great edge to it. No PC crap that holds things down now. Just plain brilliant.

reply

Well, it is a pretty routine story, if you think about it. What I think makes it work is the way Nolte and Murphy at first don't like each other, but then sort of become friends. At the end, there is a respect for each other. I was also amazed at the fact that you have an Indian killer in this film. They never did that before.

reply

I concur!

I was offended by all of the bigotry & racism. The N-word being used how many times? It was too much. Yes the film had exciting moments, but IMO, it was laden with too much negativity. A black guy called Murphy the N-word. How is this alright?

I also didn't believe Murphy in this "tough guy" role. He's sort of on the diminutive side & I wasn't buying it for a minute; especially when shouting/swearing orders at others.

You don't have to be big to be a tough guy. You ever heard of Joe Pesci? Bruce Lee?

I disagree that without this movie, there would be no action comedy buddy genre, that would start all these other movies.

This genre has been done before in at least two Clint Eastwood movies. For A Few Dollars More, which is kind of like a buddy action movie, set in the west, and The Enforcer, which is a cop buddy movie, only one of the cops is a woman, which makes it even more original, compared to the others. So how is it that without 48 Hrs, we wouldn't have all these other movies?

Okay...and this is important for us to know, why?

I liked it but I don't think it was great, I didn't find it particularly strong in any one area. I give it props for starting a popular genre though.

The greatest buddy cop movie ever

reply

THANK YOU!!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!

I thought I was the only person that didn't think this was a great movie. It was boring as hell, and Nick Nolte was just annoying in it. You want a good buddy action-comedy film with Eddie Murphy? Watch Beverly Hills Cop, not this. Even Metro is better!

reply

See, I'm the opposite: I think 48 Hours is great but I've never liked Beverly Hills Cop.

48. Hours works amazingly well as both a gritty crime story and a comedic showcase for Murphy. It's a pretty unique movie that would never get made today.

BHC, on the other hand - I never understood all the fuss. I thought it was less funny that Murphy's other early movie work and it's definitely light in the "cop genre" elements.
