The Ice Man Ben Kehoe in first film 48 Hrs.

As Nick says hes been after the Ice man for years, so what did the Ice Man do in the first film? Murphy stole the money from the Iceman before the first film. so the Iceman was obviously the Iceman back in the first film.

The second film Another 48 Hrs is set what seems to be 5 or more years after the first film, and Nolte says he has been on the case for 4 years, Ben Kehoe from 48 Hrs and Another 48 Hrs was revealed to be the Ice Man killer that was behind the events of both movies.

Kehoe even mockingly tells Cates that he is not his answering service when Cates finds out that Reggie called him from that Black club earlier and laughs mockingly about that, one hint of his bad nature early on, he uses Reggie and the Ganz Brothers to get the money for him, and probably Billy Bear, that probably why Reggie was let out because he could get the money for him.

Kehoe plays an honest cop in this movie but in the sequel he was so horrible and had been dirty all along, sucks for everyone but you can see he is hiding stuff in that scene where he didnt tell Cates that Reggie called right away.

Its 7 years between the 2 films. Cates says he's been chasing the Ice Man for 4 years. Maybe he personally didn't get assigned to the case until then. Ice Man might have been dealing in 1982 but perhaps the SFPD werent made aware of him until years later.

But also it doesnt make sense that in the first film Kehoe would point out to Jack that Ganz had a gang-mate (Reggie) still in the slammer who he could question. Kehoe knew that Reggie could identify him as The Ice Man so why risk having Jack go question him?

A LOT of footage was cut from Another 48 HRS, most of it with Kehoe which no doubt would have explained more about him being The Ice Man.

Could be as simple as the writers didn't intend for Kehoe to be the villain in the second film and therefore create this HUGE continuity error.

reply

In fairness to the writers, I'm sure they went through the first "48 Hrs" to confirm that Kehoe hadn't had any direct contact with Reggie (he didn't)

That established, it's easy to imagine Kehoe purposely steered clear of Reggie in the first movie.

It's also easy to imagine that Kehoe directed Jack to Reggie on purpose, because only Reggie knew where the money was hidden.

Didn't Kehoe talk to Reggie on the phone in the first movie? That was how Jack found Reggie at Romans (not sure if that's the right place?) at the end of the film.

reply

Good point - I went back to check (club was actually "Vroman's," so you were close - I didn't even know the place had a name in the flick).

Kehoe took a message from Reggie off-screen. Reggie called from a payphone inside the club, so it's conceivable that he didn't recognize the Ice Man's voice (especially since he identifies himself as "Kehoe" when he answers the phone). Also, since it happened off-screen, it might not even have been Kehoe who took the call.

Again, it's clear they never planned for Kehoe to be the Big Bad in a sequel, eight years later. There are just no glaring inconsistencies created by this film.

Got it. I guess it's better than shoving him in the corner for the second film. He was too good of an actor to waste that way. (Has he really be gone 20 years already? WOW!)

Dang, didn't even know he died, and I was a fan

In fact, I remember now first seeing "Another 48 Hrs." When it became apparent the Ice Man was a cop, I started hoping it was "Leon Kowalski" himself, and had already started running through the previous film in my mind, trying to remember if Kehoe had ever met Reggie in person.

When Ice Man turned out to be Ed O'Ross, I was a little disappointed, so you can imagine how psyched I was when it turned out to be Leon after all.

During the final gunfight, I kept hearing Stubbs from "Enemy Mine" yelling at the "BTA man!"
