Why didn't Luther run away with the money when Reggie went to prison?

Luther didn't strike me as the kind of guy for which friendship and loyalty were important values. With Reggie and Ganz both in prison, Luther could have taken the money, fled to another city, and enjoyed the good life. Why didn't he?

Wow. I just finished watching he film again just now and was thinking he exact same thing! I personally think its a plothole that the writers didnt think about. Luther definitely could have done with the money though as in his first scene he's arguing with Rosalie about the new furniture that they couldn't afford. Another question was why did Luther have Reggie's car keys and parking ticket?

Anyway, my guess is that Luther was just trying to go straight and lead a normal life. Remember when he argues with Rosalie about buying furniture he said something like, "what do you want me to do? Steal the money?"

reply

Although if he were really trying to go straight, he wouldn't have taken a shot at Cates.

reply

That's true. But maybe Luther didn't know he was a cop? I cant remember but didn't Cates break in to the building? Luther could have mistaken him for a burglar or Ganz.

reply

Luther was obviously terrified of Ganz and Reggie. Ganz tells him, "You better stop worrying about Reggie, and start worrying about me.."

And later on... Reggie tell Cates, "Luther won't cross me, the boy has no heart..."

So obviously, Luther was viewed as some sort of weanie in the eyes of the gang.

reply

Luther didn't steal the money because he had "no heart". It was a brief bit of dialogue, but it was addressed.

reply

Yep.

Ganz was portrayed as a total prick who would stop at nothing to hunt down Luther and torture him to death if he double crossed him. The deal probably included Luther getting a cut (maybe a third, who knows?) if he kept the car safe in the garage while Ganz was in the lockup. Ganz also could have been in constant communication with Luther "reminding" him of what would happen if he was double crossed.
