Similar Shows?

Have there been any television shows similar to "The Young Ones"? It reminded me a little of the first season of "The Monkees". Both shows had four young guys sharing an apartment with an unofficial leader named Mike. Each episode of "The Monkees" featured at least one song. And most episodes of "The Young Ones" had a musical guest performing.

I don't know of any shows with a similar format, but Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmondson made two TV series after 'The Young Ones,' and the humor is very similar: 'Bottom,' and 'Filthy, Rich, and Catflap.' Rik and Adrian starred in both of them; Christopher Ryan had a recurring role on 'Bottom' as Dave Hedgehog, and Nigel Planer played Filthy on 'Filthy, Rich, and Catflap.' I've only seen one episode of 'FR&C,' and I've seen all the regular episodes of 'Bottom,' which I think really could have been pitched as a 'Young Ones' sequel series; Rik and Ade play very similar characters in both shows. If they could have gotten Nigel Planer on the project, it could have been Rick, Vyvyan, Mike and Neil, 20 years after they got kicked out of college.

Thanks for the information.

Were those shows ever aired in the United States? That is where I reside.

Not that I'm aware. I live in the U.S., as well, and I never would have found any of those shows if a friend from England hadn't recommended a series called 'Black Books.' I ordered the DVD set, and it had a promo for 'The Young Ones.' The TYO DVD set had a promo for 'Bottom,' and that DVD set had a promo for 'FR&C.'

Any of them can be ordered from Amazon or Barnes & Noble bookstores; my local B&N has an enormous section of Britcoms on the shelves, too.

They also did sketches as "The Dangerous Brothers" on "Saturday Live" which preceded FR&C: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzlhUKJ5KvQ

Then there was the Comic Strip film, "Mr Jolly Lives Next Door" from 1988: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xr7vp_comic-strip-mr-jolly-lives-next-doo_shortfilms

YOU SHOULDN'T BE EATING SAUSAGES!!

I was always reminded of "The Goodies" while watching "Young Ones." "Goodies preceded the Boys by a fair bit and weren't quite as anarchic in their comedy, but they were pretty funny, as well. Steve V.

"Goodies . . . goodie-goodie yum-yum!"

I love the Goodies (from what I can remember of them ). Good catch

The League of Gentlemen (the sense of humor is similar)
The Mighty Boosh (musical interludes/animation skits/absurdism)
