They say that the success of Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark is what prompted Tales of the Gold Monkey and that it was influenced by that. I would have to say to some extent perhaps and while the two have some things in common, they are also very different. Indiana Jones is mostly all about action and adventure and while TOTGM certainly has its share of that, from what I've seen of it, it seems to be more comedy driven. So while Indiana Jones is mostly just about action and adventure TOTGM is more of a comedy.

It was set in thirties and featured an American trying to outwit the Nazis. If that's not like Raiders of the Lost Ark, then what is?

While there were Nazi officers (and spies) featured in this series; the citizens of the small French island were more like they were outwitting the Japanese - especially the Japanese intelligence service.

Actually this show was pitched to ABC a couple years before "Raiders of the Lost Ark" came out. It was denied. The success of ROTLA gave this show the green light.

Actually this show's roots more likely came from the old "Terry and the Pirates" comic strip.
