It's a shame that it was a shambles behind the scenes, but even the one existing season is a great snapshot of a New Wave point in time (much like 'Wings' was for New England and 'In the Heat of the Night' was for a particular climate of the modern South - although the latter shows had more material to work with). New Wave was as brief as this show - kind of came and went, leaving us with expressions like "Gag me with a vaccuum cleaner," and the showcase of a new addiction - video games).
Best line (at Mitzi's Bat Mitzvah):
Mitzi's Aunt: [dancing with Slash] "I love your hair...I have a [sweater/blouse] in that color."
Slash: (innocently)"I like yours too...I had a pair of swear socks in that color...except that I lost one, so I have...a sweat sock in that color."

The whole "gag me" thing wasn't really a staple of the New Wave world per se. It was more the byproduct of Frank Zappa's song "Valley Girl", which debuted just months earlier. It was a parody of the SoCal speech patterns of the time.

As far as New Wave coming and going so quickly, it really didn't. It just kinda split off into various sub-genres and morphed along the way. It's more that the term itself died off than the actual style or movement.

You can certainly see elements of New Wave in the later rock & pop hits of the day. It would also make its way into EDM & the appropriately termed Synthwave. The New Wave style has made a minor comeback in recent years. You can see the heavy influences in the works of groups like La Roux, the Ting Tings, & Gunship - all of which seem to also borrow heavily from the 80s visual style too.
