Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends' Own Thanos Used Unlimited Power to...Make a Cat?!

While not exactly a beloved take on the Peter Parker, Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends is certainly memorable, due in large part to how jaw-droppingly strange it is. One particular episode, "The Fantastic Mr. Frump," introduced the show's own version of Thanos, who used his powers with great irresponsibility.

"The Fantastic Mr. Frump" opens with Doctor Doom gathering pieces of an amulet and performing a ritual so as to make himself the most powerful being in the universe. However, the ritual goes awry due to Spider-Man's interference, and Doom loses his grip on the amulet, sending the powerful item down into the streets of New York City. Mr. Frump -- an old friend of Peter's Aunt May who seems caught in a never-ending cycle of bad luck -- soon finds the amulet and gains access to its seemingly limitless power, which is when the episode gets truly strange.

Mr. Frump soon starts referring to himself as Lord Frump and using his powers to remake the world according to his will, changing the city to be more psychedelic, turning a rude passerby into a clam and a variety of other small, petty uses of power. At one point, the old man even wishes for a companion, and thus creates a cat named Mabel. Eventually, Frump does start using the amulet for grander, more sinister purposes, but the initial hopes and dreams he makes a reality are generally quite mundane, especially considering he quickly learns the amulet's true power.

By the end of the episode, Doom, Spider-Man, Iceman and Firestar successfully wrest the amulet away from Mr. Frump. While Doom does initially get control of the artifact, Firestar soon destroys the item, thus keeping it out of the Latvarian despot's hands and preventing his villainous plans.

Overall, the amulet and power Mr. Frump obtains from it closely resemble the abilities of Marvel's Reality Gem/Stone, which was introduced in the '70s. The powerful item generally allows the user to remake reality according to their whims and wishes. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the comics, the Infinity Stones are generally associated with Thanos, who wants to use their power to remake the universe. However, as he was not at the time associated much with Peter Parker, the Mad Titan never actually makes an appearance on Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends, meaning Mr. Frump is the closest the show gets to having its own Thanos.
