Why did they get rid Ricky's friends

when they brought in Alfonso Ribiero to be his friend they got rid of Freddy, JT, and Derek Although I do remember Derek's parents got a divorce and he went to go live his mother

Rumour has it that they were starting to take away attention from Rick so Rick's mum had them taken off the show.

Rumors aside, in terms of the show's story-line and dynamics this doesn't make sense. Rick and Edward were essential to the entire plot of the show, there's no way to have really taken away any sort of real attention from either of them, without completely changing the story-line. Rick, Freddie, Derek, and later Alphonso, were three(four) completely different characters, who for the most part played nicely off one another. I do wish however, that the show would have continued running for at least a few more years, I would have liked to have seen Rick and Alphonso's relationship develope more. Alphonso's comedic character versus Rick's more serious one would have been an awesome subplot in and of itself and one that could have been milked for at least another two seasons.

Rick and Alfonso are still friends in real life. I saw a picture on the Facebook Silver Spoons site. They were together with their wives.

According to sitcoms online: http://www.sitcomsonline.com/silverspoons.html, JT and Brad only appeared ocassionally. Although I don't think the dates on the site are accurate, having watched most of the episodes again, it doesn't seem as though either JT or Brad were regulars in the sense of Freddie and Derek (and later Alphonso). My guess would be that they replaced Derek with Alphonso, keeping Freddie on for another year. He shows up in quite a few episodes with Alphonso. The last episode I ever saw Freddie in, personally speaking, was ''Twas the Night Before Christmas'' in which the Strattons took in Freddie and his family for Christmas (Freddie's house having been burnt down). If that was truly the last episode, then I suppose it could be said, that Freddie and his family moved away. Something else that I also noticed, is that the older Ricky got the less of a trio there actually was. Tons of friends started popping up all over the place (which would be typical of highschool and a kid involved in numerous extracurricular activies (as Ricky supposedly was)).

I am watching this show on DVD, Season 1 for the first time ever. This is a very good show. Its amazing all the different actors that are on this show, guest or regular. Jason I remember from Hogan's family. I looked up other guest stars and was amazed to see who was on this show.

I buy the idea most of the friends drifting off as Ricky got older. But Bateman was becoming a breakout star, and he was clearly removed from "Silver Spoons" because he was stealing scenes from Ricky.

I do not agree with this. Jason Bateman was offered his own show "It's your move" and he quit "Siver Spoons" for that reason.

Lets just assume for the sake of arguement that this is True-"Its your move" lasted for only 1 season-Silver spoons lasted 5 seasons. That is 3 seasons after Bateman left. Due to this fact-it's not hard to figure who was the true star at the time-Ricky of course.

I happen to dislike Archie Bunker with great passion and conviction

Now of course this COULD all be rumor, but I have, over the course of my life, known some stage moms/dads and kids that were on TV...

One of the stage moms I used to know INSISTED it was because Ricky Schroeder & Jason Bateman were caught having a little bit TOO MUCH fun in their dressing room by Ricky's EXTREMELY protective, over-bearing stage mom!

Jason was then IMMEDIATELY jerked from the show over this incident!

Again, this could be rumor, but it DID come from a fairly credible source. This woman was a stage mom of a boy who appeared on several TV shows in the 70's & early 80's. (He was on "Little House on the Prairie" for instance several times.) (And no, I won't be naming names, just to protect their privacy.)

Do you mean that Schroeder and Bateman were engaged in homosexual activity in the dressing room?

Just met Erin Grey at New Orleans Comic Con and talked to her about Silver Spoons and Buck Rogers. I asked specifically about Jason Bateman on Spoons. Directly from Erin Grey, she said Ricky' mom felt threatened by Jason Bateman because his comedic timing was perfect. He was a natural when it came to acting and Ricky's mom would get into furious arguments with the directors about Bateman. So Bateman left the show to pursue his own career. I was shocked at how personal Erin Grey was the entire time. It was as if we were old friends, and it all started when I asked about Bateman. For what it's worth, she's 62 and still looks gorgeous.
