To me, the show went downhill after Derek was gone from the show. Ricky needed a foil in the same way that Richie needed one with Fonzie on "Happy Days". Or, going back even further, Wally needed with Eddie Haskell on "Leave It To Beaver". Derek was the antithesis of Ricky and usually would do the wrong thing, but every now and then he would do the right thing like in the episode where Ricky makes bets on football games using a computer. Ricky was more book-smart than Derek, but Derek was more street-smart than Ricky.
I heard that the reason why Jason Bateman left the show is because Ricky Schroeder's mom was unhappy that Bateman's popularity had eclipsed Schroeder's on the show. There were many girls back then who had crushes on Jason Bateman and even then they dug the bad boy. Not that Ricky Schroeder didn't have girl fans, but Bateman WAS a scene-stealer and he helped make that show a hit. He was too popular for some people so NBC decided to give him his own show, "It's Your Move", in which he played a different character yet he was very similar to Derek. The show bombed. And the next show that Jason Bateman did was the Valerie Harper show where he played a very different character, the oldest brother of two.
