The problem with this show was NOT Scrappy!!!

The problem was, for whatever stupid reason, they decided to drop the entire "fake monsters" concept (which is what keeps the Scooby series interesting - creative monster designs and guessing who the bad guy is in the end)and replacing it with a generic cartoon feauring Scooby and Scrappy.

Totatlly disagree.

After first 16 episodes, I think HB had to make Scooby and Scrappy shorts with real monsters. This was because some of the actors became unavailable. For Example, Patricia Stevens had to leave after 11 or 12 episodes. So Marla Frumkin got the role of Velma after that. After 16 episodes, Lennie Weinrib who played Scrappy doo became unavailable. So Don Messick got the role of Scrappy doo after that. I think Frank Welker was also unavailable for a short time.

Think of this way: For nearly 10 years, (not including 1971 and 1978 due to no Scooby Doo series being produced at the time,) the whole "Bad guy in a Mask" thing was getting old, so, they did the shorts to bring life back to the series. Some of the shorts were good and most weren't but, it was different then the "Bad guy in the Mask" format that preseeded it.

Some of you are partially right.

The initial version of this series (season 1) was its own show and a continuation of the "Scooby Doo Show" version of the series, thus the entire gang is involved. The episodes after season one and before Daphne returns to the group were all apart of other series that Scooby shared with other Hanna Barbera characters(Scooby Doo/Richie Rich Show, Richie Rich/Scooby Doo/Puppy Hour), this is why the segments were five minute shorts. The absence of Fred, Velma and Daphne is partially due to some of the voice actors involved in the big strike in 1980 which delayed the fall season shows.

They should have put Scooby-Doo on hiatus if they had casting problems.

The series retained the central voice actors of Shaggy and Scooby, so to give the writers a break they just cut out the other characters which is why there were a couple seasons of just Shaggy,Scooby and Scrappy episodes. The mystery element and Daphne came back when the strike was over.

I feel it was a good idea to have real ghosts in the show as it would have made it more of a challenge for the gang to differentiate the real ghosts with the fake ones.

Something tells me you hate the direct-to-video SD movies.

And no, I don't hate Scrappy, I blame the hatred for Scrappy on blinding nostalgia.

reply

Well i'm sure that's a logical reason some of the older fans may not like him. But most "scrappy hate" as a phenomena is better placed on people who had far more bias and inaccurate statements then "i liked it before they changed".

However props for using nostalgia in a more accurate sense. Better than a lot of others on the internet that abuse it as a way to defend limited tastes.

Thank you.

Also, are you serious? Fake monsters are less interesting than real ones. Looks like I've found yet another nostalgiatard.
