Similar shows?

I loved both Remington Steele and Scarecrow and Mrs King when I was younger. They were two of my first favorite series I never missed and I now have the dvd's. I also love Castle now. Can anyone recommend any other series similar to these three (old or new)?. Thanks ....... I was never fond of Moonlighting or Hart to Hart.

reply

While it's not really similar on premise, I enjoy Burn Notice. It's well written and the relationship between the romantic leads definitely has some RS qualities.

I love H2H as well as Remington, Scarecrow and Castle.

I guess it's because the Harts were already married so they never did the "will they or won't they" thing. I hate that. Either be a couple, just be friends or go your seperate ways.

In the beginning my sister liked Moonlighting but I was never a fan.

I never liked Moonlighting either, but, I loved Scarecrow, Hart, Remington and Castle. You can't find many shows like this anymore ......... Although it was a supernatural show, I loved Ghost Whisperer aswell mainly because of the marriage between Jim and Melinda.

Since Moonlighting was created by Glen Caron, a former Remington writer, it was only to be expected that Moonlighting would share similarities with Remington. Brosnan once said that he wanted Remington to have been more like Moonlighting (more hard-edged with less comic relief) but I think Remington Steele has stood the test of time better than Moonlighting has which proves that Remington Steele had the right formula all along.

If you like GHOST WHISPERER, you might like the similar TRU CALLING. The lead actress works in a morgue, and *some* of the bodies actually grab her and ask for her help to resolve something from their life - the grabbing is somehow surprising most times. Sorry, I don't remember any wedding of the lead character.

These are a bit farther away from STEELE:
If you want *chemistry* and teasing/flirting, you can get that with Ziva and Dinozo in NCIS (beginning in season 3, but Ziva left the series last season, and Kate in seasons 1 and 2). It is split between a procedural show, and detective work. An older series you might like is DARK ANGEL (Jessica Alba and Michael Weatherly (Dinozo in NCIS)), and curiously enough, it included him getting head-slapped by Jessica, predating that gimmick in NCIS! That show is set in a slowly recovering post-pulse world, with limited electricity, tech, and fuel, (natural solar flare(?) is mentioned but not explained).

I can't think of any TV shows that remind me of this one. However, I would suggest going to the movies that RS is based on . . . specifically film noir from the 40s and 50s. Many of the movies that Remington uses to solve the crimes really do have similar plots. In addition, the use of the city of Los Angeles as a character, the femme fatales, the sexual tension between the detective and his leading lady, cops as bad guys, the style, etc. . . . these are all taken directly from noir. Give them a shot!

You could try "White Collar". It's about a conman, very much in the Steele mould, who is let out of prison early, into the custody of an FBI agent. The conman, Neal Caffrey, has a similar look to Steele, and is similarly fond of vintage styles. It might not be easy jumping in now (we're halfway through season four), but the whole series is available on DVD. I think there's a good chance you'd enjoy season one.

Neal Caffrey is very much a modern day "Remington Steele." I think of Al Mundy from "It Takes a Thief," Remington Steele, and Neal Caffrey as being very similar characters.

"Forget reality, give me a picture"-Remington Steele

I have to disagree a little...
There is no Laura Holt character in WHITE COLLAR, but it has something of a love interest du jour for Caffrey, and it has a much larger cast than RS. The *tone* of the shows is generally similar though.

With the much larger cast is a lot of veteran actors, and that formula typically turns shows bad, but not in this case. With the Neal Caffrey character playing in the movie MAGIC MIKE, it seems WHITE COLLAR is nearing the end of its run though. Rather than the fault of the show itself, the larger casts naturally cost more, and that alone tends to shorten the run of shows. IMHO, that is the case with WHITE COLLAR.

Yes, definitely - I also think Neal Caffrey is very much a modern day RS! They share very similar interests (old films, good wine, fine art, luxury lifestyles) and dress in much the same style (3-piece suits have never looked so good). Brosnan was more charismatic IMHO and Laura wore the fedora instead but yes, absolutely, the similarities abound!

Neil's relationship with Sara (Hilarie Burton) owes some elements

But if you substitute Bromance for Romance you can definitely see the Fingerprints on the Neal/Peter dynamic...

-- write out Elizabeth, and change Peter to 'Petra' and how much of the script really needs to change? heck you could sell it to Logo w/o the gender switch

The other replies must be from newer fans...

Seriously, no one mentioned SILK STALKINGS? (DVDs available)
As I remember the show, it was nearly a clone of REMINGTON STEELE: P.I. detective story, male and female Private Investigator partners, although I don't remember a version of the office manager. The actress was a dark haired look-alike, (I guess blondes were still *ditzy* at the time) Mitzi Kapture, (yeah, almost as bad a *professional name* as Karen Cliche (assorted action movies), or Nana Visitor (Star Trek Deep Space Nine))

Scarecrow (single) and Mrs. King (married, so friendship but no fireworks) was a bit more like McMillan and Wife (obviously married though), but Mrs. King was sort of sneaking out to do the dangerous stuff (maybe a little like Castle(?), but his family knows). McMillan was the Police Commisioner, but *Wife* kept finding oddball cases or getting asked to do things, reluctantly recruiting her husband and his people when necessary, and I think the two had a housekeeper named Mildred that occasionally got involved.

P.S. If you haven't seen the movie TRUE LIES, you will probably like that.

BTW, my favorite BURN NOTICE episode had the guy dressed in a black suit with a red shirt, and dark sunglasses, making like he was the devil, and *something* blew up each time he snapped his fingers!

I think Simon & Simon shares a lot with Remington Steele in tone and style. It's two dudes instead of the man/woman dynamic. Private dicks and mischief. Terrific show. It was made at the same time and it ran for years so there's lots of eps.

Remington Steele always reminded me of the 1960's show The Avengers with Patrick MacNee and Diana Rigg. All the shows that you mentioned owe something to The Avengers for leading the way for this type of show. The Avengers could be serious or funny but were usually very good shows. MacNee had several partners starting with Honor Blackman (of Goldfinger fame, Diana Rigg, and finally Linda Thorsen. I always enjoyed The Avengers and I also enjoyed Remington Steele.

I enjoyed The Avengers and I loved The New Avengers

I would recommend the BBC show Death in Paradise, three seasons on Netflix.

Also Psych was a good detective show.
