I wonder if this show would be different with a laugh track

I know Abraham and Zucker didn't want a laugh track for the show but I wonder now if it would have been better or worse with one... I might be tempted to record one for it and sync it up sometime soon

It wouldn't have worked - the gags are largely visual and because they are constant throughout each episode, the laugh track would just be overkill. There are tons of subtle ones too, so too much laughter would take away the effect I reckon.

i think it would be bad with a laugh track, i don't like laugh tracks at all, because the laugh track always come on when it's not even funny ex. in friends.. then the cast just stands there for the laugh track to quit. it's not fun at all

The TV show "Friends" did not have a laugh track (except for some parts of the London two-parter). Their laughter came from a live studio audience which is NOT a laugh track.

I can't think of a more inappropriate show for a laughtrack. The ABC execs must've been complete idiots.

A laughtrack for this show would have been like colorizing the beginning and end of "The Wizard of Oz".

I'm trying to remember, did "Sledgehammer!" have laugh-track?

Indeed, for a visual gag (one that you might not see at first) where do you place the laughter? It absolutely wouldn't work. I don't like laughtracks at all, they don't add anything to a show.

Sledgehammer had a laughtrack for one of its two seasons. I cannot remember if it was during the first or second season. I'm thinking it was added to the second season in an attempt to save the show.

I'm not sure a laugh track would work here, but if you ever get one together, YouTube it. Would be an interesting watch, whatever our opinions. On a slightly related note, Red Dwarf in the UK released several extended episodes on VHS with all laugh tracks removed. It was so different. Just...bearable!

Yep, have to agree. For instance when "M*A*S*H" was broadcast in England we had the laughter track removed; now if I am overseas and catch re-runs with the laughter track it makes me realise how dumb they really are. I mean, who is anyone to decide where and when a person laughs? Surely it is down to the individual's sense of humour; after all, we do not all laugh at the same things, do we?

reply

At least the laugh track in M*A*S*H was subtle and was not as noticeable since it really was a funny show. It's these really lame comedies that might have 2 or 3 lines per show that is funny that have the laugh track just roaring every 20 seconds that are annoying. It's odd that the laugh track would be removed in England since classic British comedies seem to have such prominent laughter. I thought I read somewhere that in the UK it used to be law that comedies had to have laugh tracks.

laugh tracks are used to cover up bad writing and un-funny, badly delivered jokes.

i mean, if we were laughing out loud at the jokes, we wouldn't be able to hear the laugh track, right?

please 'synth out' the laff track on that 'al bundy' show before you 'synth in' a laugh track on Police Squad. i think that you'll see the difference immediatly.

be well. 42
