Knight Rider was cancelled because of greedy Universal

Typically a network is responsible for cancelling a series; in this case it was Universal who decided to cancel Knight Rider, because they couldn't get the money they wanted for syndication, apparently. The show was winning its time-slot and the ratings were good.

From the book Knight Rider: 30 Years of a Lone Crusader and His Talking Car: by Knight Rider fan Joe Huth.

Producer Burton Armus recalls the show's cancellation. "When we wrapped the final episode, which was 'Voo Doo Knight', nobody knew that there would not be a season 5. No one knew that Knight Rider would end. Season 4 was within budget, the show was still successful and Universal was happy with the ratings. Season 5, up to then, was going to happen. The problem was selling the syndication rights. At that time, when a studio sold the rights, they would get $1.5. million for 110 episodes, which was seen as a complete package. Knight Rider had done 84 episodes, but if you count the doubles we had 90. We didn't get any offers for $1.5 million. To be honest, the studio would have accepted for $1 million. In the end, they received an offer for $100,000. This was embarrassing for them. Usually, the network can be responsible for cancelling a show, but in Knight Rider's case, it was the studio. Universal cancelled Knight Rider. It was a shame and I told them that we should film a season 5. I promised them that I would bring in each episode for under $900,000, but they were not interested. If they had received a good enough offer for syndication, there would definitely have been a season 5, no question. But in 1986, the market for such things had gone down.

I loved this show as a kid and I still like it, especially at 51
I'll tell the CRAP that's on nowadays cannot compare to the TV shows of 70/80's.

I think five years is enough - the show had run its course, and they were out of ideas. All obvious ideas had already been done. It would've just been 'the usual crap' after that.

By the way, I love the 'different viewpoints to the same thing' they had in that wonderful episode, 'Trust Doesn't Rust' - when you bingewatch this show, this is the first show that really opens your eyes and makes you pay attention - where you truly feel awake, like something fun and exciting is actually happening.

K.A.R.R. sees K.I.T.T. as an inferior production line copy, where K.A.R.R. sees itself as the unique and powerful original, and thus superior.

K.I.T.T. sees K.A.R.R. as problematic prototype, whereas K.I.T.T. sees itself as new, improved (maybe even upgraded) model.

There's SO much brilliance in this episode, and yet some troll in these forums bashes _THIS_ episode of all possible episodes... I still can barely even grasp that as reality.

Who can watch the 'that harmonic disturbance? What does it mean?'-scene and not laugh?
