If this started Degrassi then Why........

If this started Degrassi then why didn't the actors who went onto Degrassi Jr. High keep their original characters?

Yeah, I always wondered that, hmm

I also have been wondering this for over 20 years when I originally watched the "Kids of Degrassi Street" turn into the "Degrassi Junior High" series, and FINALLY, just today, I read about the History of Degrassi on: history.degrassi.ca , and this is what it said:

"In 1987, Degrassi Junior High was born out of many of the characters from the Kids of Degrassi Street. The show was not a sequel, but merely related by its geographic location. The company hired a larger cast, and seven of the original cast members remained on the next series. As Degrassi Junior High was not a sequel to Kids of Degrassi Street, there were many familiar faces, but their characters names were different."

When I started my Degrassi collection the store I usually buy from had this dvd set but I opted out due to statements I read in other sites. Stating this show was never connected to DJH,HS, or TNG due to it being it's own seperate type of show. If my memory serves correctly they stated how this show was more in line with shows like Mr. Wizard ~ where they show kids doing projects in school rather than how DJH was more like a drama/soap opera type show for the teens. Giving us much more adult issues like teen pregnancy / etc.

I always wondered when watching Degrassi why they never did give credit to this show being the start up but based on what I stated is why. They even wanted to make sure no one compared the two by changing up the character names (i.e. Stacye M. character name was changed and several others). But for the fact it was by the same producers/writers and featured same cast is only connection between the shows.

Assuming this post was meant for OP but u directed it to me. But as I stated ~ It's not the beginning of DJH or the follow up shows. Although I did find another website which shows episodes from it and it is no 'Mr. Wizard' type show and more in line to how Degrassi JH/HS/Generations is ~ but guess at time (mid 80's) they didn't want to link these kids into Junior High (mainly w/ the results they were going with ... such as parties, sex, etc) so they opted to open up DJH as a totally new show away from this one. Which is why they did not want the connection ... looking back at the one episode I did watch from this show (via Youtube) really not sure why they decided on that but guess they had their reasoning.

It really was a broomhead move. Why confuse people? I don't get the excuse of how DJH is not supposed to be a sequel. You're using the same actors, it's got Degrassi in the title - sounds like a sequel to me. And you would want it to be known as a sequel, it means you've got a built-in audience from the original series.

You've got a healthy(?) case of Degrassi nerdiness lol.

One continuity reboot in 31 years isn't too bad, anyway.

I realise this is five years old by now but I'm watching Kids of at the moment.
My guess for it is they wanted a fresh start with fresh characters that had no history and background, as in DJH&DH they often state things about the kids pasts, parents etc. so i think they wanted a clean state with nothing already determined!

just my guess!
