Timeline?

When "Happy Days" first aired, it was disctintly set in the 1950s. Now, I'm strictly going by memory here, but I seem to recall that, by the last season (which would've taken place in the 1960s), the clothing and hairstyles of the characters slowly crept towards the contemporary (for instance, Joanie's perm). And when "Joanie Loves Chachi" aired, it seemed to take place in the present day. In fact, that cheesy music they made was certainly NOT reminiscent of what was being played in the 1960s.

Has anyone else noticed this? Was this ever explained and/or listed as a continuity "goof?"

I think they just got a little lazy as far as making sure the clothing and hair styles were accurate. For instance, I distinctly recall Potsie wearing designer jeans, which were clearly from the late '70's, on Happy Days. And if you watch the opening of "Joanie Loves Chachi" the hair and outfits are most definitely not '60's - like you say, Joanie's perm, and Chachi's hair is way too long.

Although my favorite part of the opening of that show is the part where they're staring lovingly into each others eyes, and singing for the audience. . . and THEN they bring the microphones up to their mouths.

now u know why the series lasted 17 episodes. it bombed as a follow up to happy days. i did like the opening when they sang to each other. the problem is once they were young adults the happy days theme was worn out. this show took place simultaneously as the tail end of happy days if i recall. by that time i had lost interest as i grew up with happy days.

The Happy Days universe had become such an institution at this point that the show and its spinoffs(Joanie Loves Chachi, Laverne & Shirley) that were supposed to take place in the mid-1960's by this point really got lazy with styles and obviously didnt care. they were basically the 60's in-name-only.

I remember in one post-Howard episode seeing Howard Cunningham wearing a i980s LCD watch.

uncle Rico specifically said in the pilot that it was the swinging 60s they just go lazy with style.
