Anyone else love Mike? (perhaps a spoiler)

Why Mike was still single at the beginning of Series 1 is beyond me, I think he's very attractive. I can kind of see why Laura seems to think he's a bit stupid at first, but he's just shy & not used to social situations. And as the series goes on you can see he certainly is intelligent & very sweet. I couldn't believe it when Laura left him - I mean, was she out of her mind? I know the whole children thing got to her, but I personally would've put that issue aside rather than running away. As we saw, that didn't solve anything. Anyway, they were together in the end, yippee. ("I Ove You" - one of the best!)

"Inside of me, there's a thin person just screaming to get out."
"Just the one, dear?"

reply

Oh yes, Mike is a real sweetheart. I could never understand why he didn't jump at the chance of being a part of Laura's lovely family. I thought perhaps with her strange habit of shutting herself in a cupboard every time something upset her might cause him to have reservations. Rather strange behaviour for an intelligent woman nearing 40.

Lol, absolutely, I thought that was kind of bizarre too! Maybe a bit of adolescent rebellion still there. But hey, no-one's perfect. I loved Mike's shyness, the little comments & actions here & there that proved how much he loved Laura - the "I Ove You" in the final episode being the very best. I much prefer that kind of thing to huge, overextravagant romantic gestures. Sigh.

Bizarre - not to say the least. 25 years is a long time to hang on to an adolescent habit - ha!
Another thing I loved about Mike was he seemed so sincere when speaking of his profession as a landscaper. Then I read the other day that he was a very keen gardener in real life. I think this was on a "As Time Goes By" web page and Dame Judi said how she keeps his garden going still.

Aw, that's nice. I actually saw MW in Kenneth Branagh's production of "Henry V", which was part of my course work. Interesting thing was, he was playing a character CALLED Michael Williams. I remember when I read the play I thought, "Hey, Michael Williams was known for being a Shakespearean, wonder if he ever played his namesake." And lo & behold, he did.

"I'm free!" - Mr Wilberforce Clayborne Humphries, "Are You Being Served?"

reply

Lol! That's unusual. I saw him in an episode of Love In A Cold Climate and he is very cute in this in his role of Davy. He was such a good actor; Judi Dench is also in this and really down plays her role as Aunt Sadie. They were lovely together in everything they did.

I read "The Pursuit of Love" & "Love In A Cold Climate" recently, thought they were both great & then, lo & behold, the next day I saw the 1980 version with JD & MW is soon to be released on DVD. (But uncertain when - HMV says next month - June - while Amazon says September!) I thought, "I bet MW plays Davey!" And I was right! I can't wait to see it, whenever it's released.

Mike has anxiety issues which keep him from expressing his feelings. This probably came from his feeling of abandonment when he was given up by his parents to an orphanage. I think he didn't want to trust anyone. When Laura left, he was willing to have another girlfriend, but not on a perm basis. It was simply he had finally seen what a real relationship with someone fun, but as awkward as he was could be and he found he could not live without it, but was burned so bad by Laura he didn't want to commit.

I just watched this series and I feel the same way!

Tough luck, chinless

reply

Yes, he's lovely, I feel a bit like him, even if I'm a woman.

I love this series!
