overlooked?

When you hear great 80s shows this gets overlooked alot, never really mentioned

Anyone know why?

reply

I was never a fan...a bit before my time. But I know a lot about television. I like it. It's got a great cast, a great creator/producer. I think it's well known for sure because of Fox obviously and that it was a major, major hit following "The Cosby Show".

I don't know...I just can't dig it that much.

I tried watching it the other day on Peacock, it just didn't feel right.

But hey, it's a very, very successful show. To each their own.

reply

I'm pretty surprised its not full of abuse threads about it being left wing and preachy
I guess that would go to prove that so called sjw / woke isnt new

reply

I agree and I use to watch this when it aired and it was actually one of the most popular TV shows for its time.

For some reason, the current media only focus on Michael J. Fox's impact from Back to the Future but he wouldn't have been cast had he not been on an already popular "Family Ties". Michael was also a very dedicated and professional actor who didn't abandon the series after his international stardom peaked with "BthF". He actually stayed on and let the show run its course. That's very rare when you look at other television stars who weren't even big in the movies yet turned into Divas and demanded more money, threatening to leave and to do movies instead.

reply

Well said.

reply

He actually didnt have a choice to leave. getting him in the first place took lots and lots of negotiations. so much so it was cast and shot with someone else at first until they could get Fox. he had no chance of leaving that show

Curious, what other great 80s shows were there? You could definitely say "Cosby Show" and maybe "A Different World". But then I think of Gimme A Break, Growing Pains, Perfect Strangers and that one with Tudy.

Oh, I forgot another good one. "Newhart". Oh and "Murder She Wrote" though it lasted into the 90s. Oh and The Simpsons, but technically not since it technically started in the 80s, somewhere between Christmas and New Year's Eve 1989, but just had the pilot, and all the rest of the episodes were 1990s +

reply

The sitcoms of the 80's weren't that good. I feel most of them aren't that funny. I would have to say that Cheers is the best sitcom of the 80's and then Family Ties(nowhere as good, but still good). I also thought Square Pegs was good, but that really doesn't matter, since it was only on for one season. Newhart has the first 3 or 4 seasons, but then the quality of that show fell a lot. It became the Michael and Steffi show with a few interruptions by Larry, Daryl and Daryl. Most of the sitcoms of the 80's were more kid oriented and had very sloppy writing.

Because it looks at conservative as...shock...fellow human beings, and we live in a time of fascist left tyranny.

At the time though, this show was as big as they come. The buzz around it was similar to game of thrones or something today.

reply

Because it looks at conservative as...shock...fellow human beings.

That wasn't the original idea though.
The writers had planned to make Alex and Mallory "lame" and Steven and Elyse "cool".
Just because of politics.
But luckily, Michael J Fox was brilliant enough to make his character unexpectedly sympathetic.

reply

No, that's not the reason

The whole updating the 'generation gap' thing doesn't play out well today as a convincing plot line regardless of who is what politically.

People can and do easily find out about culture etc now merely by 'googling' it. There would be much less confusion/separation amongst generations. So it sucks as a plot line.

Fox is cute and stayed with the series despite being an international star demonstrating what kind of person he was. He certainly could have walked.

nahhhh

up your meds...

reply

Though it was a top ten hit in the 80s thanks to its "Cosby Show" lead-in, it's not looked at with fondness now because it isn't really very good and certainly isn't funny. I tried to watch a few episodes recently on Pluto and it was painful to watch, though it's 'easy to see why Michael.J. Fox became a star because of it. He's entertaining to watch even though the writing is abysmal.

reply

LMAO...YOU SOUND RIDICULOUS...FAMILY TIES' WRITING IS ON PAR WITH EVERY OTHER 80'S SITCOM.

reply

it's good writing yes but the idea that people have a 'generation gap' and /or don't understand their family members just because of age is harder to believe now. It's easier to research what everybody is into because of the internet. If you don't understand music etc you can look it up.

reply

Probably depends on who you talk to. Back to the Future fans like me remember this show fondly, but woketards hell bent on destroying American culture would hate Family Ties and try to get it erased from existence.

reply

lol you conservatives in this site need medication.

reply

I'm not a conservative.

reply

but need meds apparently.. my comment was to Guitar king so.... wtf are you talking about?

reply

Do you identify as They/Them or He/She or He/Her?

reply

what you identify as is irrelevant to if you like Family Ties.

reply

you keep reinforcing my point

reply

You seem obsessed with meds. Are you going through withdrawal symptoms or just retarded?

reply

I noticed that too. I think it's just a lack of imagination. When I see someone pulling out the "meds" cliche, I know it's a person without a lot of creativity or depth.

reply

if someone on a post about family ties being overlooked compared to other shows of the era cant stay on topic and instead are shrieking about "woketards hell bent on destroying American culture would hate Family Ties and try to get it erased from existence."

I can only deduce that they are unstable. that is not a normal rational response.

reply

I would have put it that way, then, instead of reverting to the worn-out ad hom that everyone here (or in any online forum, for that matter) has heard ten zillion times. You know, expand a little. Make your case in a rational way, rather than just throwing out a trite insulting cliche.

But, hey, that's me.

reply

" instead of reverting to the worn-out ad hom that everyone here"

saying "woketards hell bent on destroying American culture would hate Family Ties and try to get it erased from existence." isn't worn out.

saying someone should get on meds is the worst though. there is no expanding. its like arguing with the guy who sees the one world order Hilary child sacrifice "evidence" everywhere. there's no logical well researched argument for me to lay you. there's no rational angle for me to take to address their assertion. because their assertion isn't logical, or rational.

sometimes calling a crazy a crazy is the best you can do.

"But, hey, that's me."

yes "that is you" because you'd rather attack me for my comment that triggered you, rather than calling out his nonsense you may partly agree with. the whisper offended you, the shout and scream did not.stop pretending to be a fair unbiased arbiter. No one is buying your little schtick!

reply

I'm only suggesting that the "meds" thing is extraordinarily weak and tired. You seem intelligent. I'm sure you can do better. And, really, I wouldn't have said anything if I didn't honestly believe that.

reply

"I'm only suggesting that the "meds" thing is extraordinarily weak and tired. "

and "the woketards!!!" isnt?

if thats all you have please stop commenting. again you are angry and outraged at the whisper. indifferent to the shout

reply

Actually, I'm not angry and outraged at all. Not sure why you read that into my posts. I think I will take your suggestion though and stop commenting. I had something to say about overworn ad homs (one in particular) and you've allowed me to say it.

My interest in this thread has come to a close.

All best to you, my friend.
