How does this show end?

Can't remember

It's funny that you ask that because last night The Hub showed the series finale. It ended with Alex going off to New York after receiving his dream job for a top financial firm. You can watch full episodes at:

I don't remember Nick saying that but Andy was starring in a play as a molar. Nick starred very briefly in the last 2 episodes. The series finale was two parts. Does Andy playing a molar sound familiar to you? In the last two episodes Elise was not happy with Alex moving to New York. She was having a hard time accepting him growing up and moving out. Alex had also broken up with Lauren a few episodes prior. I wish in a way they would have gone one more season so that we could have seen how Alex's job worked out and if he and Lauren would have gotten back together. Tonight on the HUB Network they started the Family Ties series over.

How old does this show look watching it now, especially since last night HUB started the series over from the very first episode in 1982. They all looked so different back then, even the song is different.

Thanks for the info. I forgot how good this show was. Steve and Elyse were cool parents, Mallory was hot, and Alex was funny. I will be watching on hub.

ksizzle836, you are welcome. It was then and still is now one of my favorite television shows. I totally agree they were a great family. I've always had a crush on Michael J. Fox. ;-)

Bigcat, for me the show looks and feels like it was yesterday. I had just graduated from high school when Family Ties came on. So it has a lot of nostalgia for me. It was definitely weird seeing the series finale and then the next night seeing the series start over. I don't think I had ever seen the finale before and I had forgotten how young they all looked in the very beginning. Jennifer was really a cute and quick witted little girl, lol I'm really enjoying watching the series start over. And yes, I liked the song from the beginning of the series but I liked it best with Johnny Mathis and Denise Williams singing it. You can hear the whole song on YouTube if you look it up there. I like it.

reply

Yea, I hear you, the nostalgia with this show can really jump up on you. I was born in 82 but it takes me back whenever I hear that opening song. Step by Step also makes me have a similar feeling.

Family Ties is one of the greatest shows ever but for some reason it hasn't done well in reruns!

You know why it hasn't done well in re-runs? Because after all these years one can see how bad this show really was. I can' t believe I actually watched this when it did its original run. I can't even get through one episode now. It really is a corny show. Alex is always the smart-ass who proves to be right all the time, the parents are the dumb ones, Mallory is a moron, Jennifer is the calm voice of reason and there's always some kind of loving or touching scene in every stinkin' show. (And let's not get started on the creepy kid they brought in later in the show.)

Give me Married with Children any day (the first 3 seasons at least; after that a lot of the MWC shows got ridiculous too).

I've seen a few episodes online and it really feels like if it hadn't existed back then, something pretty similar would have just been there in its place - it's amusing and charming enough but there's nothing unique or special about it the way there was with Cosby or Cheers -it seems more dated than those other shows too

Wonder if its 80s popularity had more to do with coming on after Cosby?

There was. They called it "Growing Pains".

The Cosby Show was the most generic sitcom I've ever seen. On the other hand, a character like Alex P. Keaton had never been done before as far as I know, so that alone makes it "unique or special". Also, Family Ties had lots of funny scenes throughout the series, while The Cosby Show only had one funny scene.

Cheers was a great show. The Cosby Show doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence.

Family Ties could have been a lot better than what it was, had they concentrated more on comedy and less on making "Very Special Episodes". Family Ties might hold the record for the most number of "Very Special Episodes". They had too many "flashback episodes" too. Even one is too many, but they had more of them than any other show that I know of, so much so that it was parodied on SNL when Justine Bateman hosted in 1988.

Dude that is INSANITY! Family Ties is a ZILLION times better than that the garbage that was Married with Children!

I thought the first few seasons of MWC were pretty good. But the later episodes were positive garbage.

It's on every morning here 2 episodes from 11 to 12. I watch but it is hard seeing and appreciating it now. I like it purely for the nostalgia.

A group of Libyan terrorists burst into the Keaton house looking for their stolen case of plutonium and THEN shot the whole family down in cold blood... 

The original plan was for the family to die in a plane crash so there could be no reunion. That's not a joke either. It was around that time when every series finale had to do something memorable that had everyone talking.

reply

What the shit.

reply

I was half wrong. Apparently it was just something Michael Gross said at the time, and not really a plan.

Well, now i'm a little disappointed.

reply

But it turns out, they all actually died in a plane crash in the pilot episode and they were in purgatory during its whole run.
