I have fond memories of Family Ties vs Cosby and..

....I'm so happy that I was on team Family Ties.

When did they compete with each other?? Cosby is nothing but a serial rapist!

Jesus NEVER existed! He is Judeo Christian MYTH!

reply

You took the words right out my mouth. Both shows aired on NBC, so you can't really call them competitors.

I think Cosby spinoff A Different World stole their timeslot at one point and Family Ties was moved to Saturday or Sunday? So there was probably some fan feud at the end of FT's life and the height of Cosby's success? Not sure.

reply

Even when they aired back-to-back, it was fun observing the difference in family situations and conflicts and how each one handled them.

When it was divulged in a Saturday morning Popeye cartoon that Hi & Lois lived next door to Blondie and Dagwood Bumstead, I always got a kick out of reading them in the comics and thinking of them as neighbors.

Later, I would do the same thing with Arlo & Janis and For Better Or For Worse.

You should know that Lois is Beetle Bailey's sister. True story.

And somewhere did I give the impression I didn't know that?

Beetle Bailey was inspired by an old college chum of Mort Walker's nicknamed Spider when he was once drunk and was climbing up a hill on his hands and knees.

When army comics were appearing not as popular, Walker created Hi & Lois, but kept Beetle going and Lois being his sister was established.

Good for you. I'm still on team Cosby.

Bill Cosby may be a "serial rapist," but I much rather watch "The Cosby Show" over "Family Ties." Family Ties had it's moments but it's not a very funny show.

Totally agree.

Yeah, well, I can still watch Baretta without thinking about Robert Blake.

And Mark Wahlberg tried to some guys and got a slap on the wrist.

I think "Growing Pains" is the natural comparison to "Family Ties".

reply

Growing pains is the one which is not funny. Family Ties is much funnier.

The Cosby Show only had one [brief] funny scene during its entire run (from the "A Shirt Story" episode, first season).

Family Ties had a lot more funny scenes, but your best bet on a Thursday night between 8:00 and 9:00 was to tune into CBS rather than NBC and watch Magnum, P.I.

MPI was shot on 35mm film like a Hollywood movie, rather than cheap video like most '80s sitcoms were (including The Cosby Show and Family Ties), plus it featured a lot of outdoor, on-location scenes, shot in beautiful Hawaii, as opposed to strictly being shot in an indoor set. Plus it had action, adventure, mystery, and, ironically, it was often funnier than any sitcom on the air at the time. For example, the episode "Paper War", seventh season, was funnier than the funniest episodes of The Cosby Show and Family Ties combined.

At our house we only watched The Cosby Show and Family Ties when Magnum, P.I. was a rerun.
