Why is Alex cosidered the selfish one?

Sure he cares a lot about money, to me it seems like he has the biggest heart of the series. Lets look back at all the selfless things hes done compared to the others shall we?

I mean, he put his job/dreams on the line for both Mallory and Skippy.
I don't recall the others doing any thing like that.

2012, bring it on!

If you seriously have to ask this question either you did not really watch the shows or you are selfish your own damn self

reply

Because Gary David Goldberg was a communist.

reply

I agree with you OP, Alex wanted a lot but at the same time he also worked for it and did a lot of good things along the way.

If you compare him to say Mallory and Nick who just wanted things and really did little of any value than you start to get a true perspective on which characters are selfish.

reply

Alex wanted a lot and was materialistic, true. But his striving wasn't at anybody else's expense. He was out to get his, but I never saw him as shady or out to hurt or take something from somebody else (if that makes sense).

reply

I think some people assume Alex was selfish because he was materialistic. I guess having financial goals and being a nice guy are not mutually exclusive.

I remember he blew off the college interview when Mallory was upset over her boyfriend finding another girl.

If he was really selfish, he would have stayed and let her go on her way.

reply

Yes, that is true. Alex may have looked materialistic on the outside, but on the inside, he loved his family. He worked with his dad all night at the public TV station to get the documentary out. He warned his mom that Uncle Ned had a drinking problem. He tried to help Mallory out of a jam after she wrecked their dad's car (I still laugh at the scene when their father comes home and all of these people are in the living room celebrating while Alex is trying to contain a kangaroo lol). He stood up for his family after Mr. Tedesco put them down.

Plus, he worked for everything he got. He held down a job, studied hard in school, and got a scholarship. Nothing was handed to him.

Another great moment was when he signed up for the crisis hotline. He originally did it only for the college credit, but when someone suicidal calls in, he cares enough to make sure this caller gets some help.

Alex is has his faults, but when you get down to it, he does care for people.

There was a kangaroo in my living room!

reply

It was just here for the party, Dad. LOL!

Lots of LOL lines...

"Do you plan at being mad at us for the rest of your life?"
"That is my plan." Steven says dramatically.

"Can you explain the valet parking in the driveway?...the flashing 'No Vacancy' sign in front of the house?...the billboard on route 41?"

Hey, Alex put a lot of effort into that!

That was always one of my favorite episodes.

reply

My two favorites are Hotline Fever and A, My Name Is Alex. I always watch Hotline Fever when I am feeling down, and it makes me feel better that things will turn out. Every cloud has a zinc lining!!!

I guess I dont remember that scene.

The kangaroo and Steven's reaction were pure comedy gold!

Today is Daphne Zuniga's birthday. I recall watching the episode "The Graduate" a couple weeks back so I clicked the link under her credits: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0577398/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_70

I then go to the message board and find this thread. Coincidentally, yeah, he was very selfish in this episode. His pride couldn't bring himself to congratulate his girlfriend (played by Zuniga) when she was picked Valedictorian over him. He was such a big whiney baby in this episode. I ended up turning the channel shortly afterwards as I had forgotten how much of a prick Alex P. Keaton was. He had his moments, as explained in the posts above, but overall, the character was a jerk.

reply

Alex seems to have been a "jerk with a heart of gold". That means that yes, he could be selfish and rude at times. But he would also do the right thing when he knew that he had to.

Intelligence and purity.

reply

Because Alex is a conservative Republican, and in TV land they are selfish, greedy, and insensitive.

reply

Indeed, and it seems like that prejudice will never die.
But luckily, Michael J Fox was talented enough to make could make his straw character the star of the show.

reply

Alex was a 80's conservative republican.....a nearly extinct breed today. Alex liked education, he was principally interested in money and really wasn't into lecturing people re morals/values.

His hero nixon signed EPA into law, supported affirmative action, birth control, title IX and federal rehabilitation programs to increase employment options for qualified people with disaiblities.

Alex would have issues w today's GOP. He did not want to attack immigrants...etc

reply

Agreed
