Season 4 is bizarre !

They are currently showing season 4 on MuchMoreMusic in Canada. And it is so much cheesier than the earlier seasons (And Fame was always pretty cheesy, so that's saying something). I think I could have lived my whole life without seeing Leroy in a fantasy song & dance number with a snowman.

There's a lot more fantasy sequences & a lot of the time the background noise & music is completely drowning out the dialogue which I find very strange and distracting.

And I just have to say the sight of Billy Hufsey in pink tiger stripe spandex, no shirt, suspenders, & a tiger stripe bandana tied around his neck in the style a golden retriever might sport in the live concert show, is perhaps, one of the single most hilarious things I've seen in a long time.

I agree- Season 4 is when they start to go a little overboard with the fantasy, and the Nicole/Jesse stories (in my opinion). The show gets back to better character stories in the last couple of seasons.

I'm glad to hear that it gets better again, I'm not a fan of the Jesse/Nicole thing either..

Another thing I don't especially care for is the frequent use of the fake street outside the school. And all the locker room/boys with no shirts on scenes are a bit unnecessary. The whole show just seems more staged during this season.

Ok so in season 4 Holly is still there....but why is it that in the heart of Rock & Roll specials shes never a performer? They don't even acknowledge her at all...did she get fired?

reply

I like this topic!

I agree. I love the first three seasons of Fame but the fourth one seems to be in a different dimension.

I think the problem for me is that the core cast was being phased out, and the ones still left (Doris, Leroy, Danny) were starting to look a little long in the tooth to be in high school.

Jesse and Nicole got too much coverage; Cleo, too little. I never took to Billy as a character and his breaking out into songs were really cheesy. Cynthia Gibb did a nice job with Holly but her character was never groomed for Coco or Nicole star status.

Some of the fantasy sequences were ridiculous and took away from the gritty realism of the film and the sweet nature of the first two seasons.

I'm not sure why Holly is not in the special you mentioned. Apparently, the actress took a break from some epoisodes to do films. Maybe that was one of her times off.

Have to admit my interest with season 4 is not the same as the first 3 seasons either. I'm still taping every day but not watching them the way I was before.

I was too young when it was on the first time around to remember the seasons individually. Does season 5 get better? Hope so ---from the episodes I've been watching for season 4 I'm bored with the show at this point.

I always thought Season 4 was by far the worst. I guess it's because I miss the original cast and thought the story lines were so much better.

Jesse and Nicole bug me to no end.

And don't get me started on Christopher. I don't think he can sing and his acting is atrocious. He just annoys me.

The reason for Season 4 being so 'bizarre' was that the creative team who worked on Fame was fired.

Once they were in syndication (away from NBC) in season three, MGM wanted to cut corners as much as possible to save money. And it was a constant battle between MGM & the producers/writers.

So MGM fired much of the creative staff, and brought in new people to run the show who looked at the bottom line ($$$), not the creative line. Even Lee Curreri was fired, as he cost too much money (acting AND writing songs for the show)

Several of the actors questioned the quality of the scripts, which led to some of them to quit such as Valerie Landsburg, Janet Jackson, Cynthia Gibb and Carol Mayo Jenkins.

The budget was cut and cut and cut. It got to be so low budget, that Debbie Allen wears the same earrings for the ENTIRE fourth season! See the earrings she wears in the opening credits when she says "You want Fame..." She wears those earrings in EVERY episode of season four!

Just want to clarify something regarding Lee Curreri. He wasn't fired, he quit because they were not letting him write the music he wanted to write. His tastes are a lot more in the modern style plus he's nuts about heavy rock! He was fed up with the 'Fame' style of songs and he sadly never was keen about the beautiful ballad he wrote 'Could We Be Magic Like You'. One of my favourites! How do I know all this? Well I met him about 15 years ago on Venice Beach and we had a bit of a friendship for a while, stritcly platonic. Very friendly guy and he was quite amazed this 'fan' was still showing an interest in him. The show had ended 6 years before I met him! He's happily married now with kids, as am I (without the kids.) I'm no longer in touch but it was fun while it lasted. :-)

I personally loved the new look with season 4. I guess after Bruno and Doris my next favourites were Nicole and Jesse. In my own opinion I also thought Nia Peeples had the best singing voice. She made two albums after the show which I bought while in the USA. I also have Valerie's CD and Lee's. Thanks to Lee one of my old friends got in touch with Val and they ended up good friends. I got to meet her in London several years ago with her grown up daughter. Also met Gene A Ray after seeing him in the musical version of Stephen King's 'Carrie'
at Stratford-upon-Avon. That was the year before I met Lee thanks to a banjo player on Venice Beach giving me his studio phone number. This guy had actually been working there the day before I few to LA!

Gosh, all this is bringing back long ago memories here! Guess one of my personal highlights was Lee listening to some songs I recorded on cassette (as CD's weren't invented then!) I am a trained singer and he thought I had a lovely voice. He's doing extrememly well these days as a music producer who founded Xacca Sounds Ltd. It is based in California and the UK.

Nice to reminice again. :-)

Well Penny he may have told you one thing, but in an interview he says something completely different. That he was fired (option wasn't picked up)

ST: Why'd you leave Fame?

LC: It wasn't my choice — MGM didn't pick up my option — they let go of all the expensive elements of the show, including the great Bill Blinn, the Executive Producer/Writer. I think after one year of syndication, the priority for MGM was making the show as cheaply as possible, since they already made their syndication deals.

ST: I have to ask, because several people from the Yahoo Fame mailing list have asked, do you have any regrets about leaving Fame?

LC: I think the time was right for them to say goodbye — leading the double life of a musician/actor on a TV series was taking its toll on my health. Back then, as a 22 year old, I didn't really know about boundaries. Now, I'm more realistic about what I can accomplish in a day, I'm more knowledgeable about health and nutrition, and I'm careful not to run myself into the ground.

Personally I love season 4 and it's my favourite of all 6 seasons. Things certainly don't get any better in the final 2 years!

I have a poll on my fame blog and season 4 is way out in front in popularity. Check it out at:

http://kidsfromfamemedia.blogspot.com/

Season 1 was good as we established the core cast and the episodes felt solid and upbeat. The audience connected with the energy and optimistic nature of the show.

However in season 2 things got very heavy. I actually refer to it as the season of death as so many characters have a storyline related to the death of someone else Sherwood, Doris, Coco, the whole school when Crandal dies but particularly Danny. Plus there are is a suicide storyline where a couple of guest stars are on the verge of killing themselves. It was a bit hard to have a feel good sing song after that!

Also there are way too many guest stars coming on the show. Being in the U.K I'd never heard of most of these people and found it frustrating they they pretty much took over the episodes they were in and the regular cast got ignored. Audience figures dropped and the show was cancelled by NBC. Still a huge hit in the U.K. but the second season was only just starting here the BBC went to MGM with a deal to continue the show and it went into first run syndication.

The 3rd season was an improvement but by the time Erica Gimpel left we reverted to episodes filled with guest stars and the stample storyline of doomed love! Where a guest star would come on for an episode fall madly in love with a character and it all be over for some reason by the end of the episode.

With the exit of Bill Blinn as executive producer new people were brought in for the 4th season and the cast revamped. Stories were a little lighter and more fun and much more High School related. They concentrated on the cast rather than the boring guest stars. Yes there were more fantasy sequences but in some ways this made the show more realistic because it was hard to believe some of those song and dance numbers could ever spontaniously just errupt in real life so making it a fantasy made it easier to believe what we were seeing.

Season 5 was okay but the writers seemed to rely on creating episodes around established stories like "scrooge", "Sherloch Holmes", "Jekyll and Hyde", "Hucklebury Finn" etc... Some worked but some were dreadful. At least
the core characters Nicole, Danny. Jesse, Chris and Leroy get lots to do this season although the new characters brought in get very little development.

Season 6 saw the introduction of new executive producers and again the style of the show changed. Even more new people were brought on playing inferior chacters that never got developed properly and by now so many old favourites had gone. Nia Peeples was unhappy and asked for more to do as Nicole was pretty much being ignored. She was told no and left the show only for the new guys to kill Nicole off screen. It was pretty much the end and the show got cancelled that year.

I too heard Lee say he left because the producers didn't pick up his contract. He has also said that he felt he was viewed as a trouble maker because the original producers didn't want to share the music royalties with him. So when he was playing music on the show particularly music he had writen technically he should have been paid extra and had to battle the producers to get what he was due.

Cynthia Gibb took a break from Fame at the start of the 4th season and was off filming the movie "Young Blood" when the "Heart of Rock n Roll" concerts were performed so that's why she didn't appear. She was briefly mentioned by Valerie Landsburg in the 2nd part but they didn't explain during the show why she wasn't there.

The bad sound mix on the Much More Music screening on the 4th season is not a problenm the original broadcasts had. For some reason some of these episodes were given a soundtrack remix where the background noise is brought forward in the mix and at times drowns out the people speaking. The original broadcasts had no such problems.

I liked Nicole and Jesse- they were strong characters, but I did get tired of so many episodes being centered around them. Fame was always better as an ensemble show.

And Janet Jackson wasn't a very exciting addition to the cast.

The last season of Fame - with quirky characters like Reggie and Ian, and some nice writing- (Nicole's death, LeRoy maturing, a great finale) had some of the qualities that made the first couple of years so powerful. Of course, that's just my take on it.

I had no interest until Nicole & Jesse came onthe show. Season 4 & 5 were great. Season 6 could have been great, but they killed Nicole. I never watched it again after that episode. If they ever release it, I will buy Season 4,5 & 6. I also thought the Jesse and Nicole scenes were great. I also liked Cynthia Gibb and Billy Hufsy.

Slime balls I swear here they are asking him to write songs for the show and skimping out on payment. Lee had every right to demand payment for his work. The producers were a bunch of skin flints. I hated the way these producers treated the kids. The more I hear about it the more I want to beat them with an ugly stick.
