Better than Frasier...

This program was much better written than Frasier. Frasier had a lot of clunkers and the only other cast member that was good was Niles. All of the Cheers characters were great. Roz, Daphne and Martin just weren't very good. Frasier had some good episodes, but had a lot of really clunky ones. Cheers was pretty good through season 9. Season 10 and 11 weren't the best, but up until then most of the Cheers episodes were good to excellent.

Cheers is a classic. This guy was a writer for Cheers and has a fun podcast (link below):

I AGREE.

“Frazier” was a weak, pathetic cash-grab, like “AfterMASH.” In addition, the character was always pompous and grating. I much preferred Lilith, who was a full-tilt dark bitch.

No way.

I started watching Fraiser reruns on Cozi a year or so ago. They seem to only have certain episodes and were replaying a lot of them and I scaled back my viewing, but it got me curious about Cheers, so I started watching it on Hulu. Cheers is an amusing show, but it's pretty overrated. Fraiser is funnier and better written.

I don't agree. Cheers was much funnier. Better assortment of characters and interactions between them. Roz, Daphne and Martin were weak characters. All the characters on Cheers contributed to the stories just perfectly, while on Frasier, the interactions were often clunky and poorly executed. There were really good Frasier episodes, but there are also a lot of mediocre and just plain bad ones. There might be 20 to 30 excellent Frasier episodes, but then there are a few good ones, then many mediocre to bad ones. There is a lot to sift through with Frasier, but with Cheers the show really didn't get bad until the 10th season. There aren't many skippable Cheers episodes, but a great number of skippable Frasier episodes.

When is the last time you watched Cheers? I am currently watching it and say this as someone who likes the show, but there's no reason for it to have lasted this long.

reply

I agree that the show should have ended a few seasons earlier. I watch Cheers all the time. The interactions with the characters are well-defined and always progressing. With Frasier, the characters go on and on with the same old same old each episode. Niles is always trying to get Daphne who is oblivious to his intentions. Martin is generally there with his chair. Roz the loose woman is the butt of many jokes and that's about it. Yes, I still watch Cheers all the time and always enjoy Sam and Diane. The jokes are funny and make me lol. Frasier just doesn't do what Cheers does.

"With Frasier, the characters go on and on with the same old same old each episode."

This is literally Cheers. Sam is always trying to get laid, Norm and Cliff are schleps, Carla is white trash, Woody and Coach are dumb, and Diane/Rebeca are head cases.

Most of the Cheers characters are unlikable and/or losers. Sam, Diane, Rebecca, Norm, Cliff are both. Fraiser and Lilith are unlikeable. Coach and Woody are likable. Carla was a loser but likable because of her attitude; strange I know.

I fiund the show painful to watch for that reason when I stared steaming the show after all those years

Never watched Fraiser

I agree with this: "Frasier is funnier and better written" I got all 11 seasons of Frasier on DVD. Never get tired of watching it. Cheers was good but I would not pay money to own their DVD's.

The first 5 seasons of Cheers is classic. Very solid and extremely well written and acted. Niles and Frasier are the attraction on Frasier, but all of the characters on Cheers are very well rounded. I really don't find the other characters on Frasier that great. They are likeable, but I always felt that there was something missing. I guess it all comes down to a matter of taste.

They both were great shows with characters you couldn't help but love. I liked Frasier more because whenever it came on with the intro music it was such a relaxing, easy watch. Heck, I'd say 9 out of 10 characters on Frasier were almost always hilarious. Frasier, Niles, Daphne, Roz, Station Manager, Bulldog, the nerd, gay gil, Bebe. Okay, maybe just 8/10 of these characters lol and yes, Martin was the funniest!

reply

Yes, John Mahoney as Martin was great.
