Why does Christine call her father Charlie?

Sometimes she calls him Pop, sometimes Daddy, and often Charlie. Brian seems to only call him Dad. Why does she call him by his first name? It's never explained. Any theories?

She calls him "Pop," most of the time, but refers to him as Charlie, although she does occasionally call him Charlie. I think it has to do with the fact that as adults, they travel in the same social circles. Most people, when they say "My father," are referring to someone the other person doesn't know well, or at all, but because they both socialize in cop circles, everyone knows Charlie Cagney, she's used to hearing other people call him Charlie, and when she refers to him as Charlie, she is sometimes talking to people who have known him longer than they have known her.

I usually refer to my mother as "My mother," but when I am talking to my husband and step-father, sometimes I refer to her by her first name, because they are. When I am with her colleagues, I refer to her as "Dr. Goldhammer," because they do.

It's all about context.

Plus, as adults, the Cagneys are friends, buddies, and I think the "Charlie" communicates this. The fact that Brian doesn't do this shows us that his relationship with his father has not grown since he left the house.

I hadn't thought about the social circles, but that makes sense when she's referencing him in conversation.

She calls him Charlie to his face, though, and I've never understood that. Maybe it's just habit. And they seem to have a best pals kind of relationship too.

I don't think it's that complicated. She couldn't relate to her mom and high society (except for her like of classical music) but she really looked up to her Dad who she wanted to be more like, so she called him Charlie!

Well, I'm in agreement with you. After her parents were divorced she moved away from her father and seemed isolated in her mother high society world and had more in common with her father's blue collar lifestyle. I just assumed that when her mother spoke about her father she referred to him as Charlie. I think she picked up on that but, it was just a feeling I had back then in the 80's. I was a teenager and my best friend's parents divorced and when her mom spoke about him she used his first name, Robert. It was like her mother didn't want to say "your father" for some reason.
