The song at the beginning (during the war-time prologue)

So many interesting topics already that mine seems a bit shallow
but I wanted to ask if anyone knows the song the soldiers on the train are
singing. A bit off-topic of the book/series I know, but as I am very interested
of that time period also (yeah interested in WWII what a weirdo right? =P )
also regarding peculiar little details like popular jingles and such
I was wondering if anyone knew the piece the soldiers were singing
and if lyrics (or even a rendition is available on the internets

Cheers

The song is called "Bombed Last Night," and it was a popular song from Great Britain's WWI era. Here's a link to the lyrics -

The link also has a clip of the song as it was presented in the film "Oh! What A Lovely War." However, in "Brideshead Revisited," we mostly hear the "gassed last night" portion of the song.

Thank you =)

You're welcome.

And no, your question wasn't off-topic at all. I'd also add that an interest in WWII doesn't mean you're a "weirdo" - it means you're a scholar of history. And that's a good thing to be.

Good to know. I wondered if the question about such a minute detail felt off place in all the discussion about the book and series and differences and cast and crew adn themes.
Ooff-place or shallow. But great it wasnt

...yeah and that weirdo part was actually attempt at humor, since everyone seems to be inerested, or know something about WWII and it is portrayed over and over everywhere.
And yes I am interested in it, but sometimes I kind of feel it a shame that so many people interested in this do not necessarily get the appropriate amount of exposure to WWI
or Korea or Vietnam(ok Vietnam has been somewhat well portrayed) and many other interesting conflits around the world that were also very important, perhaps in some cases just as important or from certain pov more so than WWII.
Though I am beset if you perhaps have found people thinking themselves weirdos due to this kind of interest and perhaps thats why you got confused with me. That would be troubling sign of the yout, not being interested in history, or even if being thinking its somehow esoteric

By the way if you are interested in other conflicts and have not yet discovered Youtube channel Great War. It has many shows about the Great War. Their main show is a 10min weekly episode that goes through the most important happenings in that week 100 years ago. But they have special side shows about different, countries, units, famous people in the Great War and such. I heartily recommend it if you have any interest at all.

(another really good one is s small show on a Youtube Channel Extra Credits called Extra History)

Central European history - that's my thing. Especially the history of the Hapsburg (later Austro-Hungarian) Empire.

Charles Ryder's mother died in Bosnia.

"Charles Ryder's mother died in Bosnia."

Yeah I knew that, it was interesting note even if one didn't know much about the Bosnian situation. The phrasing of that tidbit info was eloquent.

That part of the history I'm not so familiar with, but interested in looking at, when I have time.

Still recoomend the aforementioned channels. Extra History actually takes suggestions
You could suggest them to do a series on Hapsburgs =)
