"Luis Obispo from Bakersfield"

I don't understand.. anyway I love this movie.

reply

I was sure you'd heard of the California cities:
• San Diego
• San Francisco
• San Fernando
• San Jose
• San Luis Obispo

Well, each of the "Dons" in charge of a city was named for the patron saint of a different city:In addition to
• Don Diego. . . .from Los Angeles, we have
• Don Francisco . from San Jose,
• Don Fernando . .from San Diego,
• Don Jose. . . . from San Bernardino, and
• Don Luis Obisbo from Bakersfield (just to break the series)The cities were named for the missions established when the Spanish conquistadors worked their way from Mexico up the California coast converting the Natives at gunpoint. (Remember, the Spanish Inquisition was in full power when Columbus made his first voyage across the Atlantic.)

This is one of my all-time favorite series of lines in any film. A brilliant play on words from the writers, and excellently delivered by the actors. It's packed with so much humor in such a brief moment, it lingers in the mind far beyond the moment. The play, well-captured on film and rarely duplicated.

I first saw and loved this movie when I was about 12. I love all the quotes already listed here but I think my fave in the whole movie is the sheep oil bit. I remember absolutely cracking up at that.

Something I think is really funny now that I just didn't really get as a 12 year old first watching it is:

Florinda: Do you realize we only make love 12 times a year?
Diego: Once a month is not too bad!
Florinda: I mean 12 times in one night, then the rest of the year...nothing!
Diego: One that one night, does he eat anything special..oysters, raw eggs?
Florinda: Garlic, a lot of garlic.

reply

No, no, I've disinherited that Latin tradition. I'm Bunny Wigglesworth now.

In the tiki, tiki, tiki, tiki, tiki room!

reply

Esteban: (trying to expose Don Diego as Zorro) "Talk like a sissy boy! Swing your hips!"

"I am the alcade of Bakersfield."

reply

two fruits one vegetable and a flower
the quote is not that funny but the way he says it makes me crack-up

reply

2 bits 4 bits
6 bits a peso
all for Zorro
stand up and say so

and what was that one about ot I ll whip yout fanny? Ah yes
"His clothes are bold, his mind uncanny, give him your gold or he'll whip your fanny!"

reply

Velasquez: "He was dressed all in black. He said his name was...ZERO, and he was accompanied by a hideous dog!"

Esteban: "I want you to find him and bring him to me immediately."

Velasquez: "Yes sir.....THERE HE IS!"

(Esteban looks at a man in black dancing with his wife)

Esteban: "This man in black? This is Senor Zero?"

Velasquez: "I am certain of it."

Esteban: "Then the hideous dog you refferred to must be my wife?"

ALSO

Guard (to Paco): "Where is your invitation, Senor Beaver?"

ALSO

CTW: "You don't really think these people are happy do you?"

Diego (quietly): "No, but I know that the soldiers are quite happy shooting the people who say that the people are not happy."

ALSO

Esteban (when CTW begins speaking in the town square): "Who is this woman?"

Cronie: "I do not think she is one of our people."

Esteban (sarcastically): "Oh, thank you, that is very helpful."

The Alcalde absolutely MADE this movie.

I totally agree with this one. My very favorite quote in the whole movie.

reply

you guys forgot the best one.
Bunny- "Thye say that the British Navy makes men. Well I'm living proof that it made me."

reply

"What are you supposed to be... some kind of Duck?"

reply

Captain Esteban - Who is this woman here, huh?

Don Francisco - I do not believe she is of our people.

Captain Esteban - Oh thank you very much, that's very helpful to me!

reply

Don Diego: He is a mute.
Esteban: Bueno! Perhaps he can give lessons to my wife.

The whole turtle story was outrageous too.

reply

"What are you supposed to be... some kind of Duck?"

Actually, I think Diego says, "...some kind of dog?" The accent throws it off. There's no way Paco looked like a duck in his bear costume, but could possibly be mistaken for a dog.

reply

"Remember, my people: there is no shame in being poor, only in dressing poorly!"

reply

Yeah, that's a great one!

El Paso, Texas...ever heard of it?

reply

How about:

"I can't believe you would enter my house without permission!'

"I could say the same thing about you and my wife!"

reply

Know me? Sink me! We were once womb-mates.

and, of course,

Walking and jumping and running in place

reply

Yes, it is "running in place," thank you for correcting that!

Diego (in shock): ... una tortuga!

Florinda: "What do the people need ROADS for? They never GO anywhere!"

Esteban: Zorro would not miss this chance to humiliate me.
Henchman: I hope you are right, your exellency.

He was dressed all in plum. Everthing matched. And he talk-ed differently. He talked-ed like a... *poof*! SMACK!

I can't remember it exactly, but the quote where Diego first meets up with Esteban & Florinda and congratulates Esteban on winning her as his bride. "It is I who congratulate you," says Esteban.

"To defeat... the feetless!"

reply

Esteban: Say something like a sissy boy

Don Diego: Something like a sissy boy

Esteban: You know what I mean. Lisp ... like thisss sss

Swing... your... hips.

Esteban: Good now flap your wrists

Don Diego: Flap your wrists

Esteban: And now say you naughty evil Alcalde

Don Diego: You naughty evil Alcalde

The way these lines are delivered by both Leibman and Hamilton with camp voices make this the most hilarious part of the movie.

reply

"Your father told me to give this to you after he died... He did die, didn't he?"

reply

Great stuff!

-Don Diego, rest assured that the turtle who did this was executed immediately.

After finding out Esteban married Florinda:
-Again, I congratulate you.
-No my friend, this time it is I who congratulate you.

reply

"For crimes against the pipples, you are sentenced to be executed until you are dead."

and

Diego: "I think I know what the problem is. There is something wrong with his bowels."
Bunny: "My what?!"
Diego: "Your bowels; the way you say your 'I', your 'E' and your 'U's..."

reply

I had forgotten that one, "To help the helpless! To befriend the friendless! To defeat...the feetless!"

That always makes me giggle like a goofball!

El Paso, Texas...ever heard of it?

reply

How about this one?

Charlotte Taylor Wilson: [to the crowd] "Let your voices be heard! Oppose the… greedy bloodsuckers!"
[She drops her pamphlets. Diego picks them up and hands them to her.]
Charlotte Taylor Wilson: "Thank you. I'm Charlotte Taylor Wilson. I'm with the People's Independence Committee."
Don Diego: "Don Diego Vega. I'm with the…greedy bloodsuckers."

El Paso, Texas...ever heard of it?

That scene where Bunny(?) pretends to be a follower of Peter, Christ's tailor. Absolutely hilarious.

Sdrawkcab kaeps uoy od?

reply

oh Heavenly Peter
He who sews and knits (he who knits and sews)
So that we may follow in His fashion
Let this simple and inane man
Find what he seeks.

reply

That prayer, and the facial expressions of both Diego and Bunny are priceless. It's almost as if Diego is wanting to say: "Is this Esteban really THAT much of an idiot?" And Bunny, as he leaves, wants to say: "Indeed he is."

And then....

Another one of my favorite quotes: "I have returned to help the helpless, the befriend the friendless, and to defeat.....the defeatless."

reply

"Why didn't I marry you instead him?"

"That's because he asked you and I did not."
