where they werewolf's?

Or just ordinary wolfs...

They're not werewolves or wolves - they're wolfen, a separate species closely related to wolves. They are above Man in the food chain and also possess additional senses and abilities that - from our perspective - are supernatural.

The movie kind of gave the impression the Native Americans shapeshifted into the wolves but everything I've read has said they are just a race of sentient hyperintelligent wolves. A bit confusing to follow.

reply

The whole Native American shapeshifter thing was just a red herring, the Native Americans explained what they really were at the bar.

reply

Yep that's it.

They were just a highly evolved species of wolves with some enhanced senses. The wolfen were not supernatural and not shapeshifters.

reply

They weren't shapeshifters, but the way they vanished at the end certainly gave the impression there was a supernatural aspect to them.

I really need to re-read the book. I had the idea that these were werewolves/shape shifters, but I could be wrong. Maybe the Native American characters were just supposed to be more aware of their existance.

I's been a long time since I read the book, but, as I understood it, from an evolutionary perspective, they are to wolves as we are to gorillas.

They are Canis Lupus Sapiens. They are to wolves what Man is to a chimp. Heightened abilities and superior in intelligence. They are incredibly deadly predators to whom man is natural prey.
