Some Interesting Parallels

I hadn't seen this movie since I was a kid, just saw it again today. While watching it I realized that there are some interesting parallels between the fictional Wolfen in the film and the real world wolf coyote hybrid known as Coy-wolves. Coy-wolves didn't exist when the movie came out, but came into existence as a reaction to their origin species being threatened by human development. Like the Wolfen Coy-wolves have adapted to live in cities around human activity. Also like the Wolfen Coy-wolves are very aggressive and unlike coyotes and wolves they aren't afraid to attack humans for prey if the opportunity arises. Very interesting creatures, I suggest Googling them for more details. But it's almost like the movie foretold the arrival of the Coy-wolves. Not exactly of course, but strangely similar in a lot of ways.

Oh I hope you read this before the boards are shut down.

You took the words right out of my mouth. I watched PBS' Nature episode on the coywolves a couple of years ago and that is exactly what I thought. To point, as an educational gag gift to friends for the holidays the following year, I gave out DVDs of the film followed by the Nature documentary. It blew some people's minds.

You can watch the PBS show here:

The coywolf, a mixture of western coyote and eastern wolf, is a remarkable new hybrid carnivore that is taking over territories once roamed by wolves and slipping unnoticed into our cities. Its appearance is very recent — within the last 90 years — in evolutionary terms, a blip in time. Beginning in Canada but by no means ending there, the story of how it came to be is an extraordinary tale of how quickly adaptation and evolution can occur, especially when humans interfere. Tag along as scientists study this new top predator, tracking it from the wilderness of Ontario’s Algonquin Park, through parking lots, alleys and backyards in Toronto all the way to the streets of New York City.

Thanks for the link. Yes I first heard about them on a Nightline segment after some of them killed a Canadian woman in a suburban park. Seeing this movie again reminded me of them. Interesting creatures to say the least.
