Stallones idea for the ending would have been hilarious

from imdb TRIVIA
"Reportedly, Sylvester Stallone insisted that his character score the game-winning goal in the film, as he felt he was the biggest star in the film. The non-American crew was finally able to convince him of the absurdity of the goalkeeper scoring the winning goal, and the penalty shot was specifically written to placate his ego."

hehehe i can imagine that ending with the Rambo battle music in the background.

Sly picks up in his own area, rolls the ball out, suddenly it's bullet time, all you see is sly running down the pitch with mines exploading every where and people hitting the deck, blasts the ball home and the net blowes up!

Going up for a last minute corner would have been exceptable, i've seen that done.

Please, heard of Jose Chilavert of Paraguay?
Many goalkeepers have scored goals through time, Peter Schmeichel and others in recent times.
He could have gone up for a corner kick by the very end and score the winning goal.. :)

BUUT I think I prefer how this movie ended!

reply

Thanks MOVIE it makes me wonder if anybody on these boards even watch football on a regular basis...a goalkeeper going up for a free or corner to try and get a goal is common...

I started out with nothing and I still have most of it left!

reply

common when you are behind, not tied.

reply

I don't watch enough, or any for that matter, soccer to know but wouldn't that be a similar situation to when one hockey team is down and they leave their goal unattended so they have an extra guy trying to score?

reply

Yes I agree in 'normal circumstances' but this was a game where winning was everything...the fact that you used the expression 'tied' makes me think you're American...thank you so much for putting the English in their place..

Good guys may not finish last but they sure as sh*t don't finish first!

Nobody in "North America" (Canada and the U.S.) watches football (of course, it's called soccer here). Well, scratch that, right now the World Cup(?right name?) in South Africa is going on, and the people that either a) emmigrated here from a South American or European or other "random" country (where football is big); or b) were raised in a house where soccer was large (because their parents or other close relatives came from a "football country") do nothing BUT watch the World Cup games! At work, TIVO'd from a 3am match, whatever.

Sorry - my point was that, as some of these "non-American" posters are saying, YES you could have a goalie score in "Euro-football", but NO that isn't why Stallone wanted to end it that way. It's because he's an ego maniac. If he would have played a "4-F Yankee", listening (somehow) to the game over a radio, he would have STILL insisted that the movie end with the Allied team winning by a last second goal AND have all of the Allies escape... all because of a "football trick" he taught Pele, which somehow also gets used to let them escape from the camp. Gotta love Sly...

Why not? There was this Argentinian goal keeper who used to score goals.

rogerio ceni. current goalkeeper for sao paulo fc in brazil. 101 goals scored.

I think the funny thing here is that Stallone was half right and this 'non-american crew' let their misguided view of sports reality compromise a good hollywood ending!

Someone should have suggested an allie gets a foot injury and goes in goal, meaning Hatch has to play outfield and scores a 30 yard left foot snorter in off the post to win 5-4 in injury time. Easy with a few special effects and a stunt foot.

Stallone thought he was a bigger star than MICHAEL CAINE?! What an eejit.

In world terms, Pele is probably a bigger star than both of them, and he's not even an actor.

True, Pele was definitely the biggest star in that film to the audience they were trying to reach.

And goalkeepers DO often score goals...admittedly through blind luck or even a little wind assistance(!) but I've seen it happen - and at the top level as well.

If Rocky Balboa listened to Lady Gaga...is this the movie we'd get? http://youtu.be/o_tPQzEkqQo

...as he felt he was the biggest star in the film.
Judged from the evidence seen in The Expendables, it's nice to see he's more of a team player these days.
