gopher turtles/Long Island

The synopsis on the dvd goofs on a man who thinks his pet turtle is a gopher - but that is what the species (Gopherus Polyphemus) is called locally - gopher or gopher turtle. I hate it when yankees go down south and twist things around to make some old kooky people look like the general population - (I grew up in the panhandle and now live in NY). Errol Morris should make a documentary about the inhabitants of his homeland, Long Island, surely the most trashy, racist, stupid people I've ever met.

Why do you think he specifically states that it's NOT a turtle?

Did you even watch the film?

reply

Because it's not a turtle. It's a tortoise.

reply

The people that think tortoises are turtles probably also think that toads are frogs and whales are fish.

reply

either 1 you have never been to Long Island or 2 you are the racist stupid person, you know nothing about what you speek, sorry if Long Island is nice and that you wish you grew up here, but you should enjoy NY while you are here

I really think that it is the 2nd you are the racist, also there are doc's about LI that makes us look bad, watch wonderland about Levittown, but you being the movie guy knew that allready

I just thought he was senile considering his age. Thanks for clearing that up for me, though. Glad to know the guy knew what he was talking about.

It's been a while since I've seen it, but I don't think that was intentional. As a native Floridian to me that's what a "gopher" is.

When I was younger they were fairly common, and many people (mostly kids) would keep them as pets. I had a couple of them myself.

Sadly now they're endangered. I haven't seen one in years.

I'm watching it right now on Netflix and there is no other commentary other than letting the folks talk. I was born and raised in northern Florida and haven't seen one in awhile, but used to catch them all the time as a kid where I'm from. While he was talking about it, I didn't even realize they were any indications they were pointing out he was mistaken until I read this thread. He knew what he was talking about and I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary as he was just talking about what all of us down here were raised with.

Very recently I narrowly avoiding running over a Gopher Tortoise while driving in SouthWest Florida.

Last year I was on a beach on the Gulf Coast replete with posted signs warning
motorists to check under their parked cars for Gopher Tortoises relaxing in the shade.

Well okay then.
