I Met the Turkey Hunter!

My wife and I are big fans of the movie and her grandparents live about 40 minutes away from Vernon. Last time we were there visiting we drove to Vernon and talked to the woman in the city hall building who told us that the Turkey Hunter was still around and loved talking to people. She gave us directions to his place so we went there. It's still the same pink trailer you see in the movie with the turkey beards and feet still hanging outside. He was an incredibly kind man and talked to us for a couple hours about the movie as well as life in Vernon. If you're ever in the neighborhood, I recommend having a chat with him (although he didn't seem to be doing all that great health-wise, so I hope he's doing OK.)

Great story jmak! Thanks for the update.

I'm a fisherman and (sometime) duck hunter, and I can truly say that that guy had his act together!

I feel sorry for any turkeys within 20 miles of him.

Ha, no doubt. He told us that Snake (his silent partner in the movie) was once the mayor of Vernon!!!

I hope he's doing better health-wise... he seemed like a pretty cool guy. I know the film was centered mosty around "eccentrics," but this guy didn't seem eccentric... just very, very enthusiastic about what he was doing. He's a good story-teller, too... if he hasn't written a book on turkey-hunting, he probably should.

I have a friend who knew him, and might have worked for him as a kid. Most turkey hunters I've met have been about that obsessed with turkeys--to do that kind of hunting, I guess you have to be. Makes a deer hunter like me feel lazy.

I think I'll just stick to fishing. And I generally catch and release.
