on dvd?
Is Vernon Florida or Gates of Heaven available on DVD? If not, are there any plans?
shareOn July 26, 2005, a box set of Vernon, Florida, Gates of Heaven, and Thin Blue Line, is coming out. Seeing as these are 3 of the greatest American films of the 20th century, I will rejoice.
shareyes it is out. I have both in an Errol (sp?) Morris collection box set.
shareResponding three years later: I just bought both Gates of Heaven and Vernon, FL at my local Big Lots store for $3 each! (This is the upside of capitalism, I guess.)

I just purchased the Region 1 MGM DVD of this film for a mere five bucks at a local Barnes & Noble in Central New Jersey.
"We're all part Shatner/And part James Dean/Part Warren Oates/And Steven McQueen"
"Vernon, Florida" is also available on Netflix.
I have the VHS and the DVD and occasionally watch it again to get a kick out of it. I moved from Miami into the city limits of Vernon in 1974. Bought 65 acres and proceeded to put in a grass airstrip for my Piper Cherokee (PA-32). Since I had to have a public hearing for FAA approval it was my first experience with the quirkiness of the residents. Years later, I was actually elected to the city council for two terms and along with the mayor was instrumental in getting a library built with state grant money, and passed Sunday beer sales, a first for Washington County.
I moved 10 miles south to a smaller house on a lake in 1994 but still look fondly on my 20 years in Vernon and its residents, many of which I took on their first airplane ride. The great majority are honest, law abiding, and very friendly people.

Wow. You lived for 20 years in that town??
Schrodinger's cat walks into a bar, and / or doesn't.
Yep, it was a huge change from my life in Miami but Miami was not the place I wanted to raise my two daughters and the crime was terrible back then with the drug dealers and the cops in cahoots with each other. It took me a few years to adapt and adopt to that style of living but I've never regretted it. When I was on the council for a short while and we got the library (hopefully so they would read), Sunday beer sales, and even landscaped the city hall front which was all dirt back then.
It's changed a lot since since I moved though. They are 4-laning the highway and a lot of the small businesses had to be moved including the city hall which is now located in the old high school.
Check it out on Google Earth Street View.
