Code Red DVD release
Anyone else enjoyed it? Apart from the feature itself, I especially apprecaited the interviews with Steven Furst and Craig Reardon. There is a certain cheapness to the look of the Code Red interviews, often done in makeshift, random locations, but nevertheless, they offer fascinating insights - Reardon and Furst both recall visits to a mental hospital, and Reardon seems somewhat uncomfortable with the characterisation of Junior as a person with Down's syndrome, while Furst delivers an amusing anecdote about eating in full makeup.
The feature itself looks good overall - there is some print damage, but it's not too distracting, and the colour tone shifts a little back and forth at one point.
Otherwise, this was a pleasant rediscovery for me. The first hour or so calmly establishes the scene and the characters, with a few truly oddball moments and two deaths creatively intercutting each other at one point. It is in the final act, where everyone seems to give it their all, that the film is at its best. The scenes between Barbara Bach and Steven Furst are electrifying. Furst manages to be grotesque and frightening while still garnering some sympathy with his uniquely challenging character. A couple of character shifts make the proceedings all the more enjoyable. I'd definitely recommend this to slasher afficionados and 80's horror enthusiasts.
