Is this movie actually available anywhere?

I saw it alot when I was 5 and then it just kind of disappeared.....

I have only seen the sequel. I used to watch it everyday when I was about 6. I always wondered why that goddess abandoned Unico in the woods and made him forget who he was. I guess this movie would explain why. I understand that there was a 3rd fim made in the late 90s...but I can't even find that one in IMDB.

I came across that one on another site.....honestly it didn't look too good.

reply

Its good I bought it the other day.

the "3rd" movie is in fact the first movie that was never released. After the death of Osamu Tezuka in 1989 the original film was given a theatrical release in Japan and marketed as a third movie. Some of the DVDs on ebay will have listed "Original Pilot" under special features, this refers to the 1st/3rd film in the seris.

Oh man, I use to love these movies, wish I could find them on DVD

Neither the original Unico nor Unico and the Island of Magic were ever released on DVD. Amazon seems to indicate that they were re-released on video a few years ago, but they are no longer available.

As far as I can tell, there is no way to get a new tape. But there are some sellers on E-Bay that sell used ones. And there are also pirated DVDs that record the old videos, if that does not hurt your conscience.

reply

Please. It would be one thing if the videos or DVDs were legitimately available. But they're not. There is no possiblilty for the original artists and producers involved to make a single dime off of this if it's not in circulation. If anything, buying bootlegs can only boost the chances of it ever being rereleased -- money talks (and beckons). I have bought a bootleg of this movie, and do not feel the least bit bad about it. If I live to see the day when the original is remastered and released on DVD, I will in all likelihood be adding it to my collection, but for now, I'm perfectly content.

reply

Is there any possible way you'd be willing to copy your bootlegs? (please oh please oh please)

reply

I dont advocate piracy, but you can now download both movies via bittorrent- go to www.torrentspy.com and search for unico. The only reason Im giving the link is because you cannot find these movies anywhere on vhs and more people need to see what gems these movies really are. Just make sure to share your bandwidth after you download so everyone gets a chance to see them.

Try looking on eBay, that's where I found my copy. :)
