the dancing

Does anyone know if Rekha was already trained in the Indian dance previous to the film, or did she learn for the film?

She moves so fluidly and naturally. I heard that in comparison, Aishwarya Rai in the new Umrao Jaan is stiff in her movements.

- Also, what KIND of dance is this? I know it is not bharatnatyam. Is it kathak? the outfit resembles what I have seen Kathak dancers wear.

Rekha's dancing, her whole body language, the hand moves, her expressions; she did everything so perfect and so beautifully in the songs. I have no idea what the dance it's called, it may be kathak indeed. Aishwarya Rai seems to dance robotic in comparison with Rekha. I don't recommend J.P. Dutta's adaptation at all.

I think rekha trained before as well this dance is an of shoot of kathak it is called "mujra" it was patronized by mughals what rekha does is a later and masses version if you want to see what is kathak in its essence when being performed in court than visit youtube and find "shatranj kay khiladi" there on a thumri a student of birju maharaj performs while he sings "kanha mein tu say hari"rekha performed superb in umrao jan songs.take care.

Thank you both for your replies! I will stay clear of the Aishwarya Rai version. It sounds like it does not compare at all to the Rekha one.

light7, I shall check out that Youtube recc! Thanks! I have never heard of "mujra", thank you for the info.
