What did he say?

During the introduction, when Des tells Tom he's dying, Tom asks if he is kidding. What does Des reply? I've played it back over and over and just can't make it out on my copy of the tape. Please help!

He says "The arteries to the pump are shot." I played the devil trying to understand this line too. I found a copy of the novel - or script, don't remember at this point - in a bookstore and hunted down the passage. Otherwise, this would have deviled me to the grave.

There wasn't open heart surgery to correct this problem in the 1940's.

reply

Actually, the main action in the film takes place in the late '40s. By the time Des is dying, it's 20 years or so later.

reply

Yes, remember on the car radio in Duvall's car, the announcer is talking about President Kennedy.

reply

you cannot have a film about the sixties without mentioning his holyness JFK.

or on the other side of the coin, you cannot make a movie about the seventies without mentioning watergate.

hollywood is predictable. all they do -- be it indie films they distribute or real films they actually make -- is the same template.

tim-hughes-1: sounds like a case of the pot calling the kettle black. It seems to me that you and enik share the same life...posting on these boards. Oh yeah, you don't need to cleverly write back and say that i'm a loser too because I wrote on the board. I know I did.

horse tooth jackass.

reply

minor blip indeed. the poster mentioned JFK, not the movie, hawkeye.

reply

Historic references are always a good way to give a timeline to a film.
