this movie was absolutely sickeningly appalling in my opinion
im a HUGE fan of de niro and ive got most of his films so i decided to buy this DVD because of the decent rating it got on imdb...big big mistake

de niro and duvalls acting was good for what it was
but here is the things i hated about the movie in my opinion

- the plot was terrible
- the dialogue was so utterly utterly boring, absolutely nothing they said grabbed my attention through this whole film
- there is no depth to any of the characters in it
- the religious talk throughout it was life draining

i know theres more but i swear it's one of the worst movies ive seen in my life
the very thought of watching it ever again makes me want to kill myself

just thought id warn anyone who are going to do the same thing as me and buy it from the rating on imdb

Is this a put-on? I ask because this film isn't available on DVD; I recently watched my old VHS copy for the first time in several years. That aside, you're certainly entitled to your opinion, but I think it's a fine film. Not great, I grant you, and perhaps not up to the standard of the novel, but one of the better color noir films I've seen. I like the complex plot, the way de Niro and Duvall play off one another, the fine supporting cast, the sustained dark atmosphere, the expert mid-century period look and feel. I'd be curious to know from you a few comparable films you like, just to get a perspective on your perceptions.

well i bought it about a month or 2 ago on DVD in a UK store
unfortunately i was disgusted with the movie i sold it on ebay the day after watching it..

Here are some films i love: (whether they explain why i hated true confessions or not,i dont know)

the godfather 1 and 2,taxi driver,mystic river,mullholland drive,21 grams,dead mans shoes, the shinning, americanbeauty, the life of david gale, se7en, scent of a woman, pulp fiction, goodfellas, raging bull, unforgiven, shawshank redemption, the list goes on and on and on...

Since I like most of those titles as well, your list is no help at all. I guess I should just follow the advice I often give other people -- be grateful that we all have different taste in people, climate, employment, hobbies, films, books, etc. And wouldn't life be boring without those differences. Cheers.

I didn't think it was *that* bad, but I will say this. It has the slowest pacing and the most cinema-verite filler of any movie I can remember. Endless shots of the Monseniour walking around, doing this or that mundane thing - I think a bit of that can add to a movie, too much can kill it. This film had too much.

I THINK YOU SHOULD ALL READ THE NOVEL (I'VE DONE SO THREE TIMES SO FAR) AND WATCH THE FILM AGAIN(I'VE DONE SO MANY TIMES). OBVIOUSLY I LIKE IT A LOT AND WANT TO BUY IT ON DVD WHEN I CAN. I THOUGHT IT CONTAINED THE BEST ENSEMBLE ACTING, CASTING, AND PERIOD ART DIRECTION OF ANY FILM I'VE EVER SEEN. THE MUSIC WAS SUPERB AND ULU GROSBARD'S DIRECTION SEEMED TO ME TO MAKE ALL THE RIGHT CHOICES. HIS WIFE'S PART AS BRENDA WAS OUTSTANDING. FEW WOMEN IN HOLLYWOOD MOVIES HAVE EVER BEEN SO CREDIBLE.

i LOVE this movie...the pacing and dialogue are perfect, the acting top-notch, and the cinematography gorgeous.

I think you must have been watching a differant movie. I rate this a good as Goodfellas or the Godfather.

I thought it was a terrible. boring film. I was very disappointed, as I think there was a whold cast of brilliant actors.I couldn't even be bothered to notice who killed the prostitute? Was it the fat policeman? I'm so annoyed that I wasted my time on this. To say that this is in the same league as Goodfellas is crazy. It's much worse than The Godfather (which I think is a very overrated film).

Never believe the IMDB reviews. My theory on that is people who like a movie are more likely to rate so it skews the ratings higher than they would be. The movie was boring and over-long. A waste of some great actors.

Why is it when a movie is plain boring or has no plot or makes no sense and you correctly point that out; you get these snooty intellectual wannabes airing the usual "you didn't like it because you lack the esoteric pseudo-sophistication that I have, to appreciate the esoteric subtle artistic sophistication this movie demands (blah, blah, blah)". I pretty much sucks. Yes, wonderful actors and acting. It was a still boring, dragging, flat snoozer. I good movie to put in at bedtime to put you to sleep.

I think its a fine film that I would rate a 7, which is about where I rank 'The Shawshank Redemption'.

Indeed ... It's just another movie of men abusing women .. they are a dime a dozen .
