best scene...

after they've gotten Nick Mancuso away from the cult, they've all been told they're liable for kidnapping charges, they're sitting around in this apaprtment eating fried chicken out of a bucket, and they start to hear a siren wail in the background...the siren gets louder, and louder, and the camera pans around as they all stop chowing...then the siren starts to die as it passes by.
The only one who never stops eating is the deprogrammer, who looks at them and says (explaining the siren, and his non-reaction):

'Hey--it's Oakland, man...'

hilarious tension-breaker in a tension-filled film...

'We all dream of being a child again - even the worst of us. Perhaps the worst most of all...'

You're right except that the guy continuing to eat was not the deprogrammer, it was the hippie dude, Eric (Guy Boyd), whom Larry met at the camp ~ the only one who first laughed at his jokes, then stopped when everybody else started laughing.
("First rule, man. Don't *beep* cooperate.")

Linc Strunc (R.H.Thomson) was the deprogrammer, and he showed up later.

It's been out on DVD for years.

Guy Boyd/ (as Eric) was, to me, the underrated "best performer" of this film. And that is NOT to slight Mancuso, Rubinek or any of the others . I just felt Boyd (through his character) brought great perspective to the film.

The fadeout.
