Does anyone remember the film this was based on?

There was a quasi-documentary released a couple of years before this film. I remember seeing it on the Z Channel way back in the stone ages. It was pretty much the same story, except that it was about the actual guy David is based on. Everyone in it was real (no actors), and like I said, it was almost exactly the same. "Ticket to Heaven" is basically a professionally acted fictional version of the same tale.

I'm pretty sure the film was called "Moonchild" or some variation on that, but when I looked it up on imdb, the films that seem like they might be the one I'm looking for have no synopsis or information other than a few production names.

Does anyone remember the documentary I'm talking about?

MOONWEBS by Josh Freed.
It's a good book.

No, I'm talking about a movie. I saw it, as I said.

This too was one of my first Z Channel films along with Ms. 45 (remember that one?!?!) around 1983. This film scared me half to death -- and Kim Catrell and Meg Foster were fantastic in it.

I only remember it as Ticket to Heaven, but could you be talking about the film: Marjoe? (that only the Z Channel showed as well?)...

I think the film is "Moonchild." IMDB shows its date as 1983, but I'm not sure if that date is correct. It's described in this article:
http://www.icsahome.com/articles/persistence-of--deprogramming--stereotypes-in-film

"The 1981 Annie Makepeace production of Moonchild is unique among cult/deprogramming films in that most of the actors are former cult members who were either deprogrammed or walked away from the group represented."

I vaguely remember seeing it a long time ago. I would describe it not as a documentary, but as a re-enactment. At the end, the main characters were listed by name along with their "deprogramming" dates.

There's more information about it on the producer's web site:

You got your mind right, Luke?

YES. That's it! Thank you. I was afraid I'd imagined it since nobody seems to remember it. :)
