You gotta be kidding me...

One of the most interesting and creative contributions to Asian cinema during the last three decades, and not a single message thread about it? What the hell is going on?

it's nt so surprising; "Don't Play with fire" is quite an obscure title, not very well-known. as of this writing there is no legitimate dvd release, and it can't even be torrented. My dvd is an unofficial one with the awful english dub that takes away much of the films power. It does have it's small cult following though, and it is worth the effort it will take to track it down. maybe someday some dvd company like blue underground will pick it up and give it a much needed revival.

This is an absolute classic of HK cinema and sadly so few people have seen it. The only legitimate DVD release is an out-of-print a French release, which includes the director's cut and the sanitized cut. All DVDs by other companies are bootlegs of the French disc. I have seen both versions of the film streamed on some Chinese video sites, and they are, of course, also bootlegs.

I recently looked at both versions and concluded that the sanitized version, with all references of home-made bombs taken out, is simply unwatchable. The film SHOULD BE about bombs, illegal arms, and warfare in general and how they destroy society. That should be the theme of the movie. In an attempt to hide that aspect of the film, they inserted scenes (like the hit and run accident) that make the film look ridiculous.
