Does he survive in the end?

I just watched it on TV, and I know he was shot by the car......

but does he survive? I can't recall if they give any indication or not.

Gracias.

If you watch carefully after he gets up, you can see he was wearing body armour. Also, when he kicks Tuesday Weld out, he gets something out of the clost that was probably the bullet-proof vest. It seems the the shotgun blast did would him slightly in the neck, however.

Ah, I couldn;t quite make out if he was or not. Thought it might have just been hios t-shirt he was tearing away from his gunshot wound.

Yeah, he makes his way to Los Angeles, changes his name to Neil McCauley, starts up his own crew pulling down scores. He is later gunned down by LAPD robbery-homicide legend Lt. Vince Hanna.

Sarcasm, it has failed.

"Listen, do you smell something?"
Ray Stanz-Ghostbusters

Not quite, but there's a subtle reference in "Heat", about Vincent Hanna "taking down Frank's crew in Chicago".

The character didn't exactly walk off into the sunset seeing as he had just blown up his assets and left his wife. But maybe he went back to her afterwards, it's pretty ambiguous.

I agree, that was left open-ended. It's obvious why he'd kicked her out, but with Leo and his gang dead, he was free to pursue that life.

It just depends on whether one believes he'd written off that life completely when he torched his assets.

If i remember that scene correctly, the bullet hits Frank's shoulder.
I also remember that after the shooting, he takes off some kind of bulletproof vest...

Prostitute: What the *beep* are you doing?
Johnny: I'm gonna kill a bunch of people.

Actually, that's not bad skidrowmofo, kinda clever, I like it....

Thanks for the reference Halmyre, I'm gonna have to watch for that next time I watch HEAT....

I loved ROLLING THUNDER too Movie Piranha 1979. I was lucky enough (and I'm old enough) to have seen it in the theater when it first came out. I've even got a paperback copy of the novelization laying around somewhere....

This is awesome to know, thanks. Exactly the kind of inside trivia I come to movie boards for.

"oh mummy, oh daddy - lets all play Kabadi!"

On the DVD commentary, Caan was of the opinion Frank survives and reunites with his wife. Mann disagreed, he figured Frank had left the domestic life behind. You could interpret it either way but yes he does survive. In the language of cinema walking off at the end definitely implies survival.
